Cllr Sandy Ezekiel steps down from TDC's Conservative Group, pending court proceedings

Cllr Bob Bayford, Leader of Thanet District Council Conservative Group today announced that Cllr Sandy Ezekiel would be voluntarily stepping down from the Conservative Group until the conclusion of legal proceedings.

Cllr Bayford said: “Conservative Group rules state that members facing criminal proceedings should be suspended from the Group until such proceedings are resolved.  However, Cllr Ezekiel made it clear to me that, being aware of this, he wished to step down, in order to focus on refuting the allegations made against him and I fully support this decision.”

  1. He will only be independent in name like TED was. He was elected as a Tory so he should resign or does that way of thinking only aply to Tory councillors that resign for the right reason?

    3. Well what about TED then 16:00? You obviousluy have some point in mind so spill it out or is that beyond your literary skills? Mind you, I think we all know who you are.

    4. The councillor from Birchington is being proven right by day regarding the hateful remarks that are being said about equality etc. We can talk again soon!

    5. If there's no need to resign now, then surely there's no need for him to leave the Conservatives either?

    6. Peter,in case you misread the main press release, it is within Conservative party rules that anyone facing criminal charges leave the party until they are resolved. There is no such requirement on a councillor.

Since he is innocent until proven otherwise, there is no need for him to resign his seat at this stage. If, however, he is found guilty then I would agree he should be expelled from office.

Not sure what a right reason is for a Tory, or a Solcialist for that matter, to resign, but crossing the floor and voting against the banner under which you were elected constitutes a betrayal of that electorate. At this point in time, Cllr Ezekiel has betrayed no one, unlike that *********** over in Birchington.

    9. Evidently the subject must have recognised himself then, Michael. Fair enough, but shame we cannot remove all those accusations of homophobia that the TIGs were happily throwing at some of us over the gay marriage debate.

  2. I know this may sound strange being a Labour supporter and a socialist but part of me really hopes he is innocent and there has been a terrible mistake.

    1. Do you think he should resign altogether if found guilty Tony?

  3. 08:38 you are absolutely correct and accurate in your description of the Birchington Ex Tory who betrayed the voters, Sandy we are all confident you will be exonerated and able to lead a normal life again, you have done so much for Thanet, and it would appear you have been betrayed

  6. Congratulations to the author for silencing the true bigots, those who brand everybody else who does not agree with their rather jaundiced and warped view of equality.

  7. This business, of being voted in for a councillor's position by the public, as a certain party councillor, has been made a farce by at least 3 councillors.
If someone is voted in as Tory Councillor and they choose to step down from this position, then they have no right to change parties without going through the correct pricedure yet again.
Many people have commented to me they voted Cllr John Worrow in as Tory Councillor as they support the Tory Party, not because he is John Worrow.
This also is the same with Cllr Ian Driver and Cllr Sandy Ezekiel, who both have also jumped parties.
If someone is accused of a criminal offence he should be suspended without pay until the end of the legal proceedings. Cllr Sandy Ezekiel has been charged with fraud and yet he has changed parties and still representing the public as a councillor, something is very wrong here. If he worked for any other organisation he would not be allowed to represent anyone until his name was cleared, does this mean the Council has no respect for the people of Thanet?
Councillors should not have the right to chop and change parties and expect us tax payers to pay their wage/allowances, if they so choose to change parties.
Councillors go from house to house and many people ask them into their homes just because they are a councillor and we are supposed to respect and believe them to be decent citizens. In the last few years, quite a few of Thanet Councillors have been accused of criminal acts, are we safe in asking any of them into our homes?

  8. Ezekiel's suspention by the Tory Party, should have included all parties.
He has no right to join the Independents and expect to be paid councillors wages. Working with the public a diffinate no no.
It was printed in the paper he couldn't attend the Maidstone Court hearing as he was out of the country, that's funny I know three people who saw him on that day, or perhaps he has a double, could have stood up in court for him if he had known. Perhaps it was his double who abused all the public at a TDC meeting last week! Doesn't sound a good candidate for any party!!!
Once he gets the verdict of not guilty then he can crawl back onto his Tory perch, but not until then.
    (can't see this happening)

    1. I quite agree with you, he is a disgrace, all councillors who are arrested or any crime should be supended without pay, definitely not allowed to attend any meetings and certainly not able to sit with their old party when they have moved to another party, does he honestly think the public will approve of this behaviour?
We shall see how he gets on in July
