Thanet has received more Blue Flag awards for its beaches than any council area in the UK. The globally recognised Blue Flags have been awarded to a total of nine Thanet beaches this year, which includes Minnis Bay, Margate Main Sands, Ramsgate Main Sands, St Mildred’s Bay, Stone Bay, West Bay, Joss Bay, Botany Bay and Westbrook Bay. Blue Flag status beaches are those which achieve the highest quality in water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management. In addition, Viking Bay in Broadstairs has achieved a Quality Coast Award for the sixth year in a row, which rewards beaches in England that achieve the highest standards of beach management. To gain this award, beaches have to meet strict criteria, including clean sands, being free of litter and dogs’ mess, having good access and facilities and guideline water quality. Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr. Iris Johnston, said: “This is fabulous news for Thanet! Achieving so many awards on our beaches confirms that we have the most enviable beaches in the whole of the UK. We work very hard to ensure that our beaches live up to the high expectations of residents and visitors and are thrilled that today’s announcement puts us well and truly on the map. Today’s announcement also coincides with the launch of a brand new lifeguard service for Thanet, ensuring that safety is a top priority along our coast. The message today is clear, if you’re looking for beautiful and unique sandy beaches, then head to Thanet.”

Excellent news, probably goes some way to explain why pacific oysters thrive on our coastline in such large numbers.
ReplyDeleteNow all we need is a flourishing regional airport to bring in the tourists!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletePS Think you will find the heat from the wind farm cables will eventually cook all the oysters, Tony, but then, shit happens, especially the dog version on Thanets highways and byways.
