HOSPITAL SERVICE PROVISION PLANS DISCUSSED

On Tuesday 8 May Thanet District Council Cabinet Member for Community Services Cllr. Iris Johnston and Community Services Manager Madeline Homer met with East Kent NHS Trust Chief Executive Stuart Bain to clarify the situation regarding future service provision at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (QEQM) Hospital, Margate amidst confusion over future proposals.

It was established at the meeting that the Kent & Medway Trauma Network proposal to identify three hospitals in Kent as Trauma Units would not reduce the Accident & Emergency and general service provision at the QEQM Hospital. Should the proposals be successful, the expectation is that on average less than one person per week would be transferred to the Trauma Unit for specialist care, improving the life chances of that individual. The Trauma Units will be a separate matter to the proposed consultation, led by Mr. Bain, on general health service provision across East Kent which is expected to commence in September 2012.

Cllr. Johnston said: “We had a very constructive meeting with Mr. Bain and are looking forward to ongoing discussions about these proposals. I will be talking to the Kent & Medway Trauma Network to understand the criteria for identifying the three hospitals as Trauma Units and will be visiting the QEQM Hospital in the near future to enable an informed response to the consultation in due course."

  2. Why then would one of the Trauma Units not be based at Margate instead of say Ashford? What ype of traumas are transferred between hospitals each week.

We seem to have a tendency to transfer services out of Margate - if travel times are not an issue then Margate would have an equal selection of services with the Canterbury and Ashford hospitals. Probably a greater share as the latter two are so near to each other. Also backoffice costs seem not to be evaluated for cuts - FOI of salaries and staffing would allow better public scrutiny.
