COUNCIL WELCOMES PORTAS ANNOUNCEMENT

Thanet District Council has welcomed the announcement that Margate has been chosen to be one of the 12 English Portas Pilot Towns.

Margate’s success means that the town will have a share of a £1.2m government cash grant, and will also receive support and advice from retail expert Mary Portas.

Leader of the council, Cllr Clive Hart, said: “This is wonderful news for Margate, and I’m thrilled for the town and its people. Over the coming months, the council will be supporting the Margate Team to fulfil all its exciting plans.”

He added: “Margate received a visit from Mary Portas in September and this was very useful for us, and we found her very supportive and enthusiastic about the town’s future.

“The winning of the bid means that we will have further help from government advisors. Therefore, this is not just about money – the town’s success means that it will gain invaluable guidance and assistance, and that’s great news.”
