Sport 4 Life 2013 improves fitness accross Thanet

Thanet District Council’s Sport 4 Life 2013 programme launched this January with the aim of giving the adult residents of Thanet an opportunity to access FREE sporting sessions and increase participation in a wide range of sports. The project, which focused on the health and well-being of participants, offered a great range of activities from Futsal to Zumba Gold and it offered its members a fun and relaxed environment in which to enjoy themselves.
The activities were delivered in 8 week blocks and supported by local coaches and clubs in Thanet. The scheme have attracted over 1067 attendances in total during 2013 and these participants have not only improved their fitness levels, and widened their social network, they have continued to participate in a range of activities.
The benefits of taking part in regular exercise are extensive. As well as increasing overall health and wellbeing, it improves fitness levels, self esteem, confidence and develops general playing ability. For those who choose to develop their skills in other areas following the free tasters, Sport 4 Life can provide further links to local gyms, clubs and leisure centre’s.
The emphasis of this programme was to promote an active and healthier Thanet and with an increase of approximately 293 participants from 2012, Sport 4 Life is proving to be a popular choice.

Madeline Homer, Director of Community Services added; “Sport 4 Life 2013 has seen an increase in Thanet residents taking part in a range of sport and physical activities. By providing these free tasters we hope that the participants enjoy the benefits and fun of taking part in sport. We have provided a flexible activity timetable suitable for all ages and abilities and are keen to continue to drive forward an active and healthier Thanet. There are a range of great clubs and facilities within the district, whether you are looking to get involved in a new activity or sport there is something for everyone.”
