A Margate man appeared before the Canterbury Magistrates’ Court on 26th March following investigations into false claims to benefits he was not entitled to.
Joel Huston (31) formerly of Fort Road, Margate was investigated for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit Fraud.
Investigations established that Mr Huston was not resident at the address for which he was claiming and that a rental agreement provided to the council in respect of the flat was forged.
In court Mr Huston pleaded guilty to two charges, making a false statement or representation that he was the tenant of the property and for dishonestly furnishing a document that was false in a material particular, namely the forged tenancy agreement. Mr Huston was sentenced to a 12 month Conditional Discharge and to pay a Compensation Order of £1430.78 for Housing Benefit overpayment and £70 towards the prosecution costs.
