MARGATE’S BIG EVENT TAKES OFF FOR 2010

Kent's leading land and air festival, Margate's Big Event, will this year celebrate the best of wartime and modern flying over the Father Day's weekend (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June).

Ed this is the promotional video for the 2009 big event and contains film of the 2008 big event.

The event, organised and funded by Thanet District Council, is now into its fourth year and will feature a unique celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Stunning Palm Bay will once again be the location, offering superb views of all the flying action.

A specially choreographed tribute will be the centrepiece of the flying programme on the Saturday, with historic Spitfires taking on German planes, just as they did in 1940 over the skies of Kent. The Sunday will see the aerial action coming completely up to date, with an appearance by the world famous Red Arrows.

Both days will have a full programme of flying, along with a mixture of live music, street performances and entertainers on the ground. The event will be open from 10am until 10pm on Saturday and from 10.30am to 6pm on Sunday. Saturday evening's concert will celebrate 50 years since the formation of the country's most successful band, with a performance by the Magic of the Beatles, who have played for a number of celebrities over the years, including Sir Richard Branson.

This year's event will see a token charge introduced of £1 for adults and children over the age of five for each day, which will help contribute towards the event's running costs.

The council's Events Manager, Gillian Shepherd, said: "Margate's Big Event is already well established as one of Thanet's top events and is known throughout the south east as being Kent's leading land and air show. This year, we're delighted to be playing our part in remembering the events of 70 years ago that took place over the skies of Kent in the Battle of Britain. Once again, we're putting together a superb line-up for the whole weekend, with something for the whole family to enjoy.

"Unfortunately, over the years, Margate's Big Event has become a victim of its own success and that's part of the reason we're introducing a token charge of just £1 this year. Anyone who's been before will know how much is on offer at the event and will realise that's a very small price to pay for the huge variety of land and air activities that we have taking place."

Tickets will be available on the day and anyone who pays for admission will be able to get a hand stamp, allowing them back into the site later that day. For more information about Margate's Big Event, visit www.thanet.gov.uk/margatesbigevent

  1. Absolutly brilliant as usual. Had a fantastic time and the children loved the rides and stalls. Can't wait until next years.
