Plans to move the Big Event into the centre of Margate to build on the opening of Turner Contemporary have been given the green light.
The proposals were agreed last night by the council’s Cabinet (Thursday 17 March), who also agreed to continue funding 12 other events across Thanet for the 2011/12 season.
The event will take place on the weekend of Saturday 18 June and Sunday 19 June, but will move to the seafront in Margate. Under the proposals, it would be centred on the area from the Clock Tower to the far side of the Winter Gardens. A decision has not yet been taken on whether to stay with the Big Event name.
Director of Environmental Services, Mark Seed, said: “With these proposals, we can ensure that we have an event that supports the heart of Margate, Turner Contemporary in its opening year and the Winter Gardens as it celebrates its centenary. We are only too aware of the difficult time that traders everywhere are having and we hope that, by moving the event on to the seafront, we can help to bring much needed income into those businesses.”
The aim is to retain a flying display and ground based entertainment as part of the event, but the final form of the event has not yet been agreed.
