HISTORIC DAY FOR RAMSGATE

The Port of Ramsgate played its part in Aviation History yesterday with the arrival in Ramsgate of the DORNIER DO-17 World War II German bomber.

The aircraft which had been shot down in 1940 had attempted to land on the Goodwin Sands and subsequently sank upside down. Two of its four-man crew were killed and later found on shore and the others became prisoners of war.  The aircraft was largely intact, and it prompted a five year salvage operation which consisted of sonar and magnetometer surveys, diving surveys and countless hours of work from the RAF Museum, Wessex Archaeology and English Heritage.

The safe recovery of the aircraft with minimal damage and its conservation presented many challenges. However, the RAF Museum is experienced in dealing with aircraft which have been immerged in water for long periods of time.

Rebecca Dalley, the Museum’s Project Development Manager, stated: "The help and attitude of everyone involved from Ramsgate has been amazing and their flexibility and support has been crucial to the success of the project."

Rebecca went on to explain that once the plane is moved to their conservation area in Cosford, it will go through a stabilising process which will involve the plane being submerged in a citric acid and water solution to stabilise the aircraft.

The RAF Museum hopes that the plane will be ready to take part in new exhibitions which will see the Royal Air Force Museum transformed as part of the national and international programme marking the Centenary of the RAF in 2018.

Councillor Alan Poole, Cabinet Member for Operational Services  said "Thanet District Council is proud to have played a part in the RAF’s salvage of the Dornier DO-17. The staff at the Port have worked with the RAF, and Seatech and assisted with the safe arrival of the aircraft and we would like to thank all of those involved.

  1. TDC desperate for good news around the port after FerryGate. For 3 million quid I would hope the port did help by being open. With Pleasurama limping along we need P45's issued for failure.

No wonder - they have little else to do and their time and effort is at the expense of Thanet council tax paying residents.

Is Alan Poole thanking us for our deep, pockets?

    1. Do you ever have a happy day, Anon. A little bit of history comes to Ramsgate and you have to knock it, yet again trying to bring about a thread switch to your favourite topics involving P45's et al.

    2. If someone wants to spend hundreds of thousands on raising a bomber from the seabed that was sent to kill our grandparents, that's up to them.

Just don't do it at my expense. Did they pay any berthing fees?

    3. 12.48 - is that you Alan?

    4. To be fair to Alan who's one of the better councillors, Everitt was the Finance chap approving secret ferry deals and Pleasurama deals

    5. "Alan Poole is one of the better Councillors". Are you totally deluded. The man is total embarrassment and not fit to hold office.

    6. As opposed to a rude anonymouse like you. I was considering Alan's efforts in the round not just the Pleasurama fiasco and stand by the fact that he is one of the better councillors. You've probably forgotten HOOT etc. You can see from Ian's Driver's efforts that the senior civil servants lead many of the councillors by the nose.

  3. Annon 12:48 You are right that the Dornier landing was fascinating, however after the excitement we have to come back to reality. TDC is a disaster and this has got to be addressed. A lot of people are very angry and the losses and incompetence especially of Alan Poole is mindblowing. The sooner the man goes the better for all concerned.

  4. Let's hope the Manston airshow planes don't crash and burn too. Dodgy safety proceedings by TDC and Infratil and a disaster waiting to happen again.

    1. You an aviation safety expert as well then, Anon. Explain why the safety proceedings are dodgy if you can.

    2. Hey. They're your kids not mine. I don't live near the airport. Learn some manners if you want an explanation cancer victim.

    3. I think that should be burns victim rather than cancer victim!

    4. The nutty Anon is talking to himself again and even forgetting which site he is on having used the 'cancer victim' label elsewhere on Thanetonline. Could anyone be more tasteless than this creep?

  5. Thank goodness for smear-merchant-in-training Farnie B'stard though. They'll explain the safety failings with the Air Show? Or the cancer problem with the airport?

    1. Who will explain, Anon, clearly not you as usual, Anon. Just the same old unfounded allegations with nothing to back them up.

    2. Looks like Farnie Anon has nothing to offer on the Airshow or airport cancer just insults. With JHBS we seem to have determined efforts to close down debate through insults and empty postings.

    3. What exactly is contained in your posting, Anon 9:36, certainly no facts or salient points, just your usual dismissal of others. Do you not realise how ridiculous you come across to most of us who read these sites.

You claimed the safety planning for the airshow was flawed. OK, so you prove it or shut up if you cannot.

    4. Anon 15:02 the discussion was on cancer because of the Manston. And the safety flaws in the Airshow. You've added nothing to the discussion at all apart from a few feeble insults. No wonder you're Anonymous. But take a look at the Airshow safety details or the cancer statistics and let us know your informed view.

    5. Anon 19:26, the discussions was not on cancer until you introduced it, why is it OK for you to be anonymous but not me and, yes, I have looked at the plans for the Manston Airshow and they comply with all the normal requirements for such events. Perhaps you can tell us what is wrong with them as you raised it. Like I said before, you are becoming increasingly ridiculous with your mindless repetition of the same old points.

    6. That was quick and you seem very sure the Airshow is completely correct and safe. Do you have the approved maps? You'll see they don't include the towns. And yet the guidelines specify that overflying houses as dangerous and should not be carried out.

Either rank incompetence or a bit of jiggery-pokery from Infratil and the organisers. Yet you've checked the plans and not spotted that?

Maybe you should remain Anonymous. Although you'll no doubt tell us there is no cancer and the training flights for semi-trained pilots is a good idea too? If you're not Charles Buchanan you should be.

    7. Anon 20:16, there is no us, just you. You also do not have the intellect or the literary skills to engage in a written debate so I will stop wasting my time. If you ever substantiate anything you claim I might respond, but, until then, you can whistle.

    8. How strange of Anon 20:16 not to be able to advise on the Airshow maps. How has the Airshow been approved if the towns are left of the maps?

Looks like a Manston-right-or-wronger who can't explain the safety reaches by TDC and Infratil.
