Running three miles, twice a week around the streets of Margate was the challenge taken up by 20 women who responded to a story in the Thanet Kentish Gazette in January.
Now the Thanet Jelly Legs Running Group is starting yet another beginners group with Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in mind.
Training starts very gently with the women walking for 4 minutes and then running for 2 minutes. Within the 10 weeks training programme this builds up to more running than walking says group leader Lisa Moore with people only doing what they can. The aim is to reach a level of fitness that will enable new runners to jog for 30 minutes without stopping.
“The best thing about Jelly Legs is that we do not put pressure on anybody and we never judge anyone by their level of fitness. If we can get a few more women jogging than walking then the group will have been a success,” said Lisa.
The new 10 week course starts on 26th April 2011 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm. Sessions will be at various locations around Thanet.
Lesley of Margate was one of the women who responded to the story in the Gazette. She said: “I have lost a stone which I am delighted about and feel so much better. I now feel confident about running the Race for Life in Herne Bay this year.”
Sharon, Broadstairs, had never run before. “I was extremely anxious about joining the group but Lisa immediately put me at ease and has been extremely supportive and encouraging. I am now looking forward to running the Margate Race for Life.”
Louise, has run before but had let her training lapse. She said: “I really enjoy coming along as it is so friendly and running with everyone else encourages you to keep going. I have entered the Race for Life in Margate.”
Membership of Jelly Legs costs £50 and includes 10 training sessions with a qualified leader, a Jelly Legs t- shirt or vest, water bottle, membership discount card and quarterly newsletter.
Lisa added: “All of our members go on to achieve personal targets and goals whether it is a five kilometre Race for Life or a marathon. We all start as individuals that think we cannot do it, but with a bit of training and a lot of laughs along the way we all get there in the end.”
