PIE DAYS AND HOLIDAYS

Captivating food and holiday stories are the inspiration behind an
impressive new piece of art displayed along Margate seafront.

Stretching 48 metres long, the colourful hoardings which have been
erected in front of the Arlington site, are a celebration of Margate,
and have been captured to record real life stories of the people who
live in, and love to visit, the original seaside town.

Collected from December to March 2011, the stories were gathered at a
number of public places.  This included local eateries, bars and even
from a mobile pop up pie days booth which took the artistic team to poly
tunnels, community centres, corridors and local markets.

Artist Sophie Herxheimer, working alongside Kate Kneale at Marine
Studios, invited local people and visitors to share a memory and to
watch as Sophie captured it live with ink and brush before being
presented with a copy of their unique artwork to take home.

Kate said: “So many people in Margate have an interesting story to
tell so we thought this would be really creative way to capture them.
We worked with the theme of food because it is a universal theme,
everyone could join in.  We collected stories of love, greed, poverty,
ritual, joy, childhood, embarrassment and rivalry; and of course being
Margate they are memories of holidays, friends and Dreamland.  The
hoardings are just a snap shot of the stories collected, the whole
collection is on display in the gallery so it would be great to see lots
of people come along to our exhibition”.

Director of the Margate Renewal Partnership, Derek Harding, said:
“The hoardings are a real conversation piece in themselves. They
look amazing and really help to brighten up the lower end of the
seafront.  This key part of the seafront is the gateway into the town
and is part of the bigger plan to improve the experience of locals and
visitors to Margate”.

Pie days and holidays is a project commissioned jointly by Thanet
District Council and MACH and is part of the exciting count down to the
opening of Turner Contemporary on 16 April 2011.

The stories that they have collected will be on display now at Marine
Studios from 2.00 - 5.00pm daily until 26 April 2011.  For more
