SEAGULL BAG SCHEME EXPANDED

Another 1,000 properties in Broadstairs and St. Peter’s, Westgate and Ramsgate will be soon be getting seagull proof bags to help stop attacks on their rubbish.

The scheme, which was first tried out in the Eastcliff area of Ramsgate, led to much cleaner streets and was supported by the residents who took part in it.

Now another set of homes, which are not suitable for wheeled bins, because they are in roads of mainly terraced homes with no front gardens, will be joining the scheme, with weekly collections continuing, from the last week of April. If your property is included, you will be receiving a leaflet by Monday 11 April, with full details of how the scheme will work.

Education officers from the council will also be visiting the areas to deliver the bags to people’s homes and will try and speak to as many people as possible to explain about the new scheme.

The seagull proof bags are designed to protect black rubbish sacks from seagull attack, with each one large enough to hold around two or three black rubbish sacks, which should be tied securely at the top. The lid of the seagull proof bag needs to be closed correctly, so that seagulls can’t get to the rubbish inside.

Commercial Services Manager, Mark Seed, said: “When we tried the seagull proof bags out in Eastcliff, they certainly helped to make the streets a lot cleaner and met with a good response from residents. It’s fair to say that there were some issues identified as a result. In the trial, some people left their seagull proof bags out all the time, which led to complaints from others that it made the area look untidy. As a result, we’ll be asking everyone who joins the scheme to take the bags back inside at the earliest possible opportunity, after the collections.

“We also need everyone on the roads being added to the scheme to play their part. It only takes one person not using the seagull bags for rubbish to be strewn all over the streets again. If you are given a bag, please do use it, as it will help to keep your neighbourhood clean and tidy.”

Each home will receive one seagull proof bag, although if there are four or more people living permanently in your house, you can request an extra bag. Any waste put loose into the seagull proof bag or left outside of it will not be collected.
