DIPPERS AND DUNKERS RETURNS TO MARGATE

Visitors are expected to roll up this summer to enjoy the second Dippers and Dunkers festival in Margate, which celebrates the best of New Variety, a touch of Burlesque and Seaside Entertainment.

The festival, which is run by Thanet District Council, has been expanded to a whole week, running from Friday 20 August until Friday 27 August. It takes its name from locals who would 'dip' and 'dunk' their sea-bathing visitors in Margate's salty waters.

This year's Dippers and Dunkers offers something for the whole family with the amazing 1950s Sideshow Illusions returning to Margate Old Town. This year, two newly restored sideshows will showcase the Flea Circus and the Monster Show, with people disappearing in front of your eyes. It will be the first time that the sideshows all appear together outside. All the sideshows are free and are wet weather friendly. In another new addition, the Insect Museum will also be crawling into town, with performing wasps and centipedes making their debut in Margate.

The award winning Sassy Seaside Show returns to the Theatre Royal, with the cream of New Variety acts, with the popular 'Bears' back in town, along with national and international performers. The theatre will also host a look at the history of British Burlesque in a Glimpse of Stocking, with ladies' beginners' burlesque classes accompanying the show. International music genius and sex symbol 'Earl Okin' will also appear at the theatre, with his amazing one man show 'Spend the Night with Earl Okin, Earl's fans include The Queen, Van Morrision and Sacha Baron Cohen.

My Body, My Art, an exhibition of tattoo art, photographed by regional artist Marie Muscat-King goes on show at the Harbour Arm Gallery, along with 'Margate Mermaids' courtesy of the Dreamland Archive Project, where we will be showing a vast amount of 1950s newspaper cuttings. At the Pharmacy Gallery, Southern Water's sponsored 'Margate Drawn' shares caricature art of visitors to Margate and Thanet from the Regency period onwards, including several new caricatures for 2010.

There will also be the chance to take part in family circus workshops, enjoy Punch and Judy shows on the piazza and take part in workshops to make papier-mache puppets. The Bo-Ho Market returns to the Old Town, doubling in size and there will also be walks and walks to learn more about Margate's entertainment history.

Cllr. Martin Wise, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: "Following the huge success of the first Dippers and Dunkers festival last year, we're bringing it back, but making it bigger and better. Building on comments we got from visitors, we've expanded on the popular elements and have ensured that we've bought back shows and activities that went really down with the public last year. Dippers and Dunkers has already created a great name for itself as a superb addition to the line-up of great events happening through Thanet this summer. With it now expanded to a week, I look forward to seeing it bring even more people into Margate."
