SHOCKING NEW THRILLER SET IN THANET

A shocking new thriller set in the Isle of Thanet, East Kent paints a picture of vicious hate crime, poisonous politics and naked corruption.

“Death In Thanet” tells the story of private detective Jane Marks called in to investigate the death of a local councillor. She finds deadly danger lurking in the seaside locality.

Author Arlene Blower says her book is entirely fictional but based on her experiences after coming to live in Thanet three years ago.

“I knew there was something in the air when someone told me Thanet actually means “island of death”,” Blower says.

“It really is an amazing area,” Blower says, “On the one hand it’s a very poor seaside area, with homeless people and ghettoes.

“On the other hand you have people from London attracted by the hopes of regeneration, bargain property prices and the Turner Contemporary.

“Mix in with all that a history of corruption and gangsters going back to the KrayTwins and you have in Thanet the perfect location for a modern day thriller.”

The book is being serialised in Thanet Watch magazine, with the first instalment appearing in the November issue, and the book scheduled for publication in 2013

Thanet Watch publisher Norman Thomas says that he’s really excited to be able to serialise Death In Thanet in the magazine.

Norman says: “It really does give you a real feel for the seamier side of life on the Isle. I think it will shock some people – but this is really how things are around here.”

Thanet Watch will be on sale in newsagents from November 1st.

  1. Don't you just love people who in just three years claim to know more about Thanet than those of us who grew up here. Seedy politics, island of death and all serialised in the Thanet Communist party propoganda sheet. What more could one ask for?

Think I will stick with Modsommer Murders myself.

    1. Any intelligent person knows about Thanet's problems before they arrive! Reading, watching and listening however, is no where near as alarming when you find out the extent of foul play, the blatant disregard of legislation etc. particularly by those who should demonstrate integrity and leadership. Thanet nurtures people who are narrow-minded, ill-educated, self-righteous, inflexible, stupid, racist and more. If it wasn't for the fast receding natural beauty of the place (eg.KCC and TDC keep covering it in concrete, and Southern Water has poured shit into the sea, creating more vandalsim than any idiot with a spray-can of paint!)I'd never have come here if I could have imagined the enthusiasm and intransigence of those who appear to have power.

    2. Another Southern Water sewage leak onto Ramsgate beach last week and council silence on the Manston aquifer and Thor. Tax seems to be to fund councillors and civil servants to cover up the problems and tell us there is no money so tax has to go up.

    3. No, not the dreaded aquifer man again. You really must have a miserable existence worrying yourself to death over the aquifer and Thor site. Go out and look at the remaing colours of autumn or enjoy the sight of a light aircraft coming in to land at Manston. Life ain't all bad.

  4. Seriously - Thanet DOES NOT MEAN island of death, oh how many times do we have to say this -the name probably comes from a Celtic word tennail (Irish) which means a beacon - probably a reference to beacons to help people find their way around the coast or up the Wantsum channel.

Why is it just so much more interesting to believe something that isn't true and not dig a little deeper?

If you want my authority for saying this it is this: a degree in classical languages, an interest in philology and a professional understanding of archaeology.

    1. Did it never mean dead from the neck up? I'm a construction worker, so I know what I'm talking about! ;-)

  5. I hope you're all going to read it and comment on the real thing rather than the blog summary!

    1. Sorry, Christine, but still busy reading my way through the works of Shakespeare to have time for some unheard of author.

  6. Gotta love our Arlene Blower... who according to Google Folklore didn't even exist before the 25th October 2012! Lovin' the "My latest work..." tagline on her Facebook page! Anyone have a link to her back catalogue? Hopefully the link won't be the jottings on the back of fag packets!

  7. I think you are being rather unkind, Rob. Arlene made extensive notes from minutes of TDC meetings and articles in the Socialist Workers News before putting quill to paper so her book is well researched! Her previous epic was about Tory politicians who succumbed to the demon drink and she was working on another about banged up Labour expenes fiddling MPs, but her backers threatened to withdraw her drivel writing allowance if she proceeded with that one. Personally, I think I will 'blow' this latest offering out from my 'must read' list. Sure Christine will enjoy it though.
