Margate received fantastic feedback following an international press visit by journalists who covered the London Olympic Games this month.
The journalists’, who included representatives from China, Japan, the United States and other parts of the UK, came to the original seaside town as part of an initiative to help them explore places outside of the capital.
Organised by Visit Kent in partnership with Visit England, Thanet District Council and local tourism businesses, the reporters’ itinerary included Turner Contemporary and lunch at the Walpole Bay Hotel. The media party also took in the local sights when they toured the Shell Grotto, Tudor House and Margate’s Old Town and were also given a presentation on the future plans for Dreamland.
The council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, Cllr Iris Johnston, said: “The London Olympics received glowing praise from the international media and really sold the country to the outside world.
“It’s important, therefore, for us to capture this positive opinion that the outside world has of the UK. By bringing the international journalists to Thanet, we’ve shown them what’s on offer beyond London.”
She added: “The feedback that we received from the journalists on the day was tremendously positive, and I know that they took many happy memories with them. We’re very much looking forward to reading their coverage of the visit and hope they will feel inspired to visit the area again!”
