Thanet Independent Councillor, Ian Driver, has announced his intention to stand as a candidate in November's election for Kent Police Commissioner.

A non party political person who is so far to the left that even Thanet Labour wasn't socialist enough for him, although they were a useful vehicle by which to obtain elected office. Interesting that you can be lighter on drugs and tougher on dangerous driving when the former is becoming an increasing cause of the latter.
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect Mr Clarke and Mr Checksfield you are plain wrong . Alcohol is legal to consume, but not not legal to cosume when driving. just so with drugs i would argue. The legalsiation of drugs and prostition will help to drive out the pimps and gangsters who currently control these businesses and in so doing will significantly reduce police costs. let the debtate begin
ReplyDeleteDid the ending of prohibition in the USA see an end to drunkeness or crime. Of course, it didn't and the gansters just found other avenues in which to direct their criminal talents. We already have a problem in this country with drunken loutish behaviour, do you also want to send a message to our adolescents that drugs must also be OK because they are legal. Why not also legalise the carrying of firearms so they can protect themselves. As for the saving of police, or other public officials time, who is going to keep tabs on the legalised brothels, protect the women in them from perverts and abusers and the customers from STDs.

DeleteMr Clarke perhaps I can assist with your education. Most drugs do not cause loutish behaviour. Quite the reverse they help people become tranquil and relaxed. If drugs were legal then there is a strong possiblity that the alcohol fuelled violence and disorder would actually reduce. In an ideal world I know what I would prefer more people smoking spliff or dropping E, than drinking Stella. It's medically safer than alcohol and causes less crime and disorder.
ReplyDeletemr Checksfield for your infromation I don't drink too much alcohol. But I do smoke spliff from time to time and i do inhale. Not that I would encourage anyone to break the law. This is my own personal choice. I do however intend to use the office of Police Comissioner to campign (hopefully with other Commissioners) for a review of our archaic laws on prostitution and drugs. Being of a progressive turn of mind, i would encourage you to help my campaign and perhaps make a donation too. Unlike the big parties us independents don't have the kings ransom to pay the deposit. I await your call Mr C

DeleteCllr Driver, you have no idea about my level of education, but I would not mind betting it is somewhat superior to yours. As for your nonsense about drugs making people tranqil, that depends on the drug and the person. Murders, suicides, self inflicted injuries and traffic accidents are just some of the results of drug taking. Is that what you want to legalise and please, spare us the alcohol is legal so drugs should be.

ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone in this thread suggested it was, Anon 19:52, but a shirt lifting gender bemnder would be enough to get you nicked in most scenarios and it does seem rather odd that mutual expediency seems to have somehow moderated the offence on this occassion.

Peter, don't you just love the way politicians say, as in this case, "let the debate begin" and then, when it does, they gap it over the nearest horizon without answering points raised by others. Makes you wonder what substance their was to their case in the first place or was it just another soundbite. Mind you, in this case the worthy councillor is no doubt out looking for yet another bandwagon to jump on.
