AN OPEN LETTER TO MEMBERS OF THANET COUNCIL

Thanet Watch, Thanet’s new monthly investigative magazine has issued an “open letter” to Thanet District Council.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MEMBERS OF THANET COUNCIL

In this month’s issue of the new THANET WATCH magazine, a councillor describes a “culture of secrecy” at Thanet District Council.

Has he got it right?

Do you know of examples of secrecy in TDC?

Have you seen important things kept hidden from the people the council is supposed to serve?

Or did he get it wrong?

Can you give us examples of how transparent and open the council is?

How much does it really try to consult with people?

We will be reporting on this topic in a forthcoming issue of THANET WATCH.

If you wish to keep your identity secret, we will respect your wishes.

ALSO IN THIS ISSUE OF THANET WATCH:

  • GANGSTERS IN THANET
  • ALTERNATIVE ARLINGTON PLANS
  • RAMSGATE MUSEUM MYSTERY
  • WHO ARE “OCCUPY THANET”?

  2. The best approach would be to send them an FoI request to ask for a list of all of the FoI requests they have received in the last three years. This would give you a pretty accurate summary of the kinds of stuff people want to know and which they have to use FoI to get. Along the same lines, you might want to ask some questions about compliance with the FoI, e.g how long they take to respond and how long they take to release the information when asked for it. My impression (and I do have soem evidence) is that TDC has to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to the Commissioner's office and always loses.

  3. I am I the only person who thinks it ironic that, in its investigation into the 'culture of secrecy' at TDC, Thanet Watch is offering to keep any informant's identity secret?

    1. Sometimes to expose secrets you have to give your informant anonymity. Watergate would never have happened without an informer who was guaranteed anonymity.
