Thousands of children from schools across Thanet will be learning about water safety this spring.
The “Thanet Schools Water Safety” sessions, which start on Monday 12 March 2012, are run this year by a partnership of organisations and are coordinated by the Thanet Coast Project, with support from Kent County Council’s Local Schemes Grants, Natural England and the Big Lottery Fund.
The talks focus on the dangers around the Thanet coastline, how to stay safe, have fun on the beaches and look after the environment. The talks include representatives from the Thanet Leisureforce lifeguards, RNLI and Thanet Coast Project.
The “Thanet Schools Water Safety” programme is now in its fifteenth year, an achievement that Dave Melmoth is to be recognised for at an RNLI ceremony later this year.
Cllr. Iris Johnston, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “These immensely popular schools lectures are a vitally important part of promoting the message about water safety with local children, as the coastline plays such a huge part in all our lives. I’m delighted that the Thanet Coast Project are working in partnership with the coastguards, lifeguards and lifeboats to run these school sessions. The coastline is our largest open space, and children spend much of their holidays having fun and enjoying our beautiful beaches and we want to ensure that they know how to stay safe.”
Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project Officer, added: “The school water safety sessions will be held at over 20 schools in the next two weeks and will help thousands of school children to be more aware of the potential dangers of our coastal environment. I’m extremely grateful to our partners for help in running the sessions and the support of our funders.“
