THANET PREPARES TO WELCOME GOLD MEDALIST

The fourth annual Thanet Sports Awards are taking place on Wednesday 21 November – and this year’s event is promising to be bigger and better than ever!
Star of the show will be Jade Jones – taekwondo sensation and Olympic gold medallist at London 2012.  Originally from North Wales, 19-year-old Jade was the youngest athlete from Team GB to secure gold.
She took on and beat China’s Yuzhuo Hou at the ExCel arena and won the admiration – and hearts – of the country.
Local sporting hopefuls will receive words of encouragement from Jade, who will congratulate them on becoming recognised at the Thanet Sports Awards. And to top it all, Jade will hold a ‘question and answer’ session for the area’s future sports stars, giving her audience the chance to find out more about her life and taekwondo passion.
And to add to the Olympic flavour, Thanet’s Olympic torch-bearers will also be attending the evening – giving a positive reminder of the amazing sporting success of London 2012.
Thanet District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, Cllr Iris Johnston, said: “Jade Jones is one of the most inspiring young athletes of her generation, and we’re thrilled that she’s coming to the Thanet Sports Awards.
“Through sheer dedication and hard work, Jade has shown the whole world the heights that people can aspire to. In her native Wales, everyone is extremely and justifiably proud of her, and we’re equally proud that she’s coming to Thanet.”
The Thanet Sports Awards will be take place at Margate’s Winter Gardens and are organised by Thanet District Council’s Sport Matters team and the Thanet Sports Network.
KMFM breakfast DJ Johnny Lewis will host the evening’s proceedings.
