TOILETS CLOSED AFTER VANDALISM

Toilets at West Bay have had to be closed, after a second set of vandalism this year left them needing major repairs.

A fire was started in the men’s toilets, but the smoke also poured into the ladies’ toilet, causing damage there. As a result of the fire, toilet roll holders and soap dispensers will all have to be replaced, as they were burnt to nothing. The ceiling and walls of the toilets will also have to be repainted. The estimated cost for the repairs is around £1,500 and the toilets are likely to be closed for the next couple of weeks.

They had only recently been opened for the summer season, after being closed for two months, following the previous spate of vandalism. In that incident, extensive damage was caused to the women’s toilets, with taps and pipework for the sink ripped away from the wall. The contents of the nappy and sanitary bins were emptied all over the floor, while the toilet was blocked with debris and then deliberately flooded.

Commercial Services Manager, Mark Seed, said: “It’s exceptionally depressing for the council to be having to deal with more vandalism at these toilets, especially as they had only recently been reopened, following the previous incident. This is just mindless stupidly, which costs every single taxpayer dearly and impacts on everyone who uses the beach. The council will be doing its best to get these toilets back into use as quickly as we possibly can, with the summer season already underway.”

The incident has been reported to the police, who are investigating the vandalism. The council is asking local people to remain vigilant and if they have any information about this incident, or witness anyone causing criminal damage to contact Kent Police on 01622 690690. Vandalism and repairs should also be reported to the council on 01843 577000.
