CAMPAIGNERS CALL FOR RAMSGATE SWMMING POOL TO BE SAVED FOR FREE SWIMMING

A group is calling for Ramsgate’s old swimming pool to be saved for the community.
A new group called Save Ramsgate Pool  has called a lobby of Thanet council on this Thursday, 20th June when the council is meeting to dispose of Ramsgate swimming pool in Newington Road.
The council plan to replace the pool with a smaller new pool at a new sports centre in the town, but residents fear this will mean a rise in prices due to a combination of membership fees, locker charges and car parking costs.
Max, a spokesperson for the group said: “Initially demand may be good due to the novelty of clean floors, but we believe regular use will be beyond the pocket of the majority of rate payers and potential customers, especially if they have children.

”One of the most important things we can do is teach our children to swim and putting up prices at a swimming pool is a very bad idea. It will also take a toll on the health of the community, because swimming is so important for our health.”
The Save Ramsgate Pool group is proposing that the Ramsgate Newington Road pool should be kept as a community-run swimming pool with free use for children, pensioners and those on low income.

Max said: “Ramsgate Newington Road pool is structurally sound and functioning but has been run into the ground by the Thanet private contractors with little or no maintenance of basics like shower taps and boiler.”
He claims that with the help of local companies and other organisations the pool could be renovated and run on an economic basis, and that people are already volunteering their help. 
Max said: “The council has offered 3.5 million soft loan for the new pool at the sports centre. At a fraction of this money we can have a free community, big society pool, and save a few young lives from drowning by teaching them to swim.”
The lobby of the council will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday 20 June at Thanet Council, Cecil Square, Margate.

Secretary of State approves Arlington application

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has today (Friday 14 June) announced that planning permission for a superstore, the refurbishment of Arlington House and the development of a hotel and shops at the Arlington site has been granted.
The appeal was called in by the Secretary of State for determination following a four day public inquiry held in November 2012.
Leader of Thanet District Council, Cllr. Clive Hart, said: “The Secretary of State has now determined that the proposed development at Arlington is the right way forward for Margate.
“His decision follows a detailed and thorough examination of the plans, and has also included consideration of the feedback from members of the public as part of the public inquiry.
“From the outset we’ve been clear that we want to ensure the best possible future for this site. With the success of Turner Contemporary, and approval to progress with the exciting plans at Dreamland, unlocking the potential for further regeneration in this part of the town is absolutely key.
“There can be no doubt that the area immediately surrounding Arlington House, which is the entrance to Margate, is an eyesore.
“As the final decision for this development was outside of the council’s control, our role now will be to get the best possible outcome for the residents of Margate and Thanet and to ensure the site complements and enhances the wider regeneration of the town.”

Thanet District Council Launch a #NameThatTag Appeal

Thanet District Council has launched an appeal to residents of Thanet, to help them to identify a graffiti writer in East Kent.

The ‘SENSI’ or ‘SENZ’ tag has been seen in a number of different inks and styles, on post boxes, lamp posts, trees, buildings and walls across the district and has also been seen in parts of Herne Bay and Canterbury.

Thanet District Council’s Community Safety team have been working alongside Police officers and are currently monitoring this activity, which is costing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Images of the tag have been circulated on social networking sites including, Facebook and Twitter, in an appeal to local people to be vigilant if they see any activity along these lines and help us keep Thanet a beautiful place to both live and visit.

Graffiti is criminal damage, which can be punishable by fines or imprisonment. Officers would like to urge anyone who has any information around the person responsible for causing this damage, to contact Thanet District Council’s Community Safety team directly on 01843 577 737 or email community.safety@thanet.gov.uk.

Cllr Iris Johnston, Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “Graffiti makes our streets look uncared for and is costing taxpayers hundreds of pounds.

“To ensure we can tackle this anti-social behaviour, we need local people to work with us and report any information they have surrounding the offences so we can take immediate action.”

Event Funding Awarded by Thanet District Council

Today (Thursday 13 June) the Vice Chairman of Thanet District Council and the Chair of the Events Grants Members Panel invited local events organisers who have received funding for 2013/14 in to the council to thank them for their efforts and present them with a cheque. 
The council set aside a total of £115,000 in this year’s budget to support events in Thanet during 2013/14. Both Broadstairs and Ramsgate Town Councils each receive £30,000 of which they match fund and Margate, Cliftonville, Westgate, Birchington and the Villages collectively receive £50,000 towards funding for events.
The applications that Thanet District Council administers (Margate Cliftonville and surrounding villages) were received and assessed by a cross party panel of councillors, advised by officers, who made the final decision on how to allocate the money.
Some of the events that were granted funding were; the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Sandcastle Challenge, which is taking place in Margate, Garlinge Festival, Millmead Summer Fate, Westgate Fun Day, Margate Jazz Festival, South East Airshow and many more.
Each organisation had to meet strict criteria in their applications, including; generating money to support local businesses and traders and contributing to the visitor economy, supporting either sport, heath or well-being, culture arts or music or the area’s heritage and providing an event that is family friendly and will generate an audience.
Councillor Iris Johnston, Cabinet Member for Community Services, attended the presentation to award the cheques, she said: “Events play such a crucial role in Thanet, that is why we have ensured that there is funding in place to support them.
“We want to make certain that each of Thanet’s towns have money to put on events throughout 2013/14 to ensure we have a wide spread of activity across the area for both visitors and residents to enjoy. Thanks to this funding, we look forward to having a wide variety of events this year and I would like to thank organisers for all their hard work thus far.”

HISTORIC DAY FOR RAMSGATE

The Port of Ramsgate played its part in Aviation History yesterday with the arrival in Ramsgate of the DORNIER DO-17 World War II German bomber.

The aircraft which had been shot down in 1940 had attempted to land on the Goodwin Sands and subsequently sank upside down. Two of its four-man crew were killed and later found on shore and the others became prisoners of war.  The aircraft was largely intact, and it prompted a five year salvage operation which consisted of sonar and magnetometer surveys, diving surveys and countless hours of work from the RAF Museum, Wessex Archaeology and English Heritage.

The safe recovery of the aircraft with minimal damage and its conservation presented many challenges. However, the RAF Museum is experienced in dealing with aircraft which have been immerged in water for long periods of time.

Rebecca Dalley, the Museum’s Project Development Manager, stated: "The help and attitude of everyone involved from Ramsgate has been amazing and their flexibility and support has been crucial to the success of the project."

Rebecca went on to explain that once the plane is moved to their conservation area in Cosford, it will go through a stabilising process which will involve the plane being submerged in a citric acid and water solution to stabilise the aircraft.

The RAF Museum hopes that the plane will be ready to take part in new exhibitions which will see the Royal Air Force Museum transformed as part of the national and international programme marking the Centenary of the RAF in 2018.

Councillor Alan Poole, Cabinet Member for Operational Services  said "Thanet District Council is proud to have played a part in the RAF’s salvage of the Dornier DO-17. The staff at the Port have worked with the RAF, and Seatech and assisted with the safe arrival of the aircraft and we would like to thank all of those involved.

Call for a Ferrygate Whistle-blowers to Step Forward

After being denied access to council documents about  Transeuropa’s  (TEF) £3.4 million debt to Thanet Council,  Green Party Councillor, Ian Driver, has called for whistle-blower’s  to come forward in the public interest.
Said Driver, the Ferrygate scandal  is about as serious as it gets. It calls into question how Thanet Council is being managed. How can it be right for a small group of elected councillors and senior officials to agree a secret deal which allowed TEF to rack up a sphincter-dilating   £3.4 million debt. This is ethically wrong and quite possibly breaks the Council’s constitutional rules, EU laws, and accounting rules.
I have asked the Council’s Chief Executive and its Legal Officer to see the documents related to this scandal but they have refused. I want to know what they are hiding and  will be appealing against their decision to the Information  Commissioner. In the meantime I publically call on anyone who has access to these documents, or who has inside information about the FerryGate scandal to blow the whistle and speak to the media or myself. I guarantee  I will treat anyone with information in the strictest confidence.”
“In my opinion the public has right to know how it was possible for £millions of taxpayers money to be   gambled on a failing company, without anyone knowing. It was not right and proper  and those responsible must take the consequences  for their reckless actions. It is in circumstances like these that whistle-blowers have a critical role to play and I would encourage anyone who knows something and feels uncomfortable  about what has happened to pass on your information”
“I am determined that the people of Thanet will eventually find out the truth. I have already complained to the European Commission and will be complaining to the Ombudsman, the Information Commissioner and the District Auditor. There must be some accountability and mismanagement on this scale should never be allowed to happen again”.

Proposals for council owned sites in Thanet

Cabinet members are to consider proposals for a number of council owned sites across the district at a meeting on Thursday 20 June.
Members will review whether to approve the sale of four new sites, which been identified by the council’s Capital and Asset Management Group as suitable for disposal. The sites are:
  • Land to the rear of Courtstairs Manor, Pegwell Road
  • Part of former railway line, College Road/Tivoli Road
  • Land adjoining the Viaduct, Margate Road,
  • Land at Westgate Bay Avenue
If approved, ward consultation will be carried out in line with the council’s Interim Property Disposal Process for 21 days.
Council owned assets are reviewed regularly to see how cost effective, well maintained, well used and beneficial to the community they are.
As part of this process, assets which are considered to be surplus are presented to Cabinet for potential disposal. The money raised from the sale of these sites is then used to help pay for priority capital projects such as the construction of the new Ramsgate Swimming Pool.
Cabinet will also consider a proposal to extend the term of the lease of the Royal Victoria Pavilion in Ramsgate in order to generate the level of investment needed to get the building back into use.
The property, which has been empty since 2008, is a substantial Grade II listed building within an important conservation area and will require extensive investment to bring the property back into appropriate use.
There are currently 31 years unexpired on the original lease agreement, which was agreed by the council in 1969.
Officers are requesting to open up the marketing of the site in order to offer an extended lease of over 100 years to a new potential leaseholder, with the council retaining the freehold of the property.
They believe that offering a term of this length would be likely to help support the significant level of investment which would be needed to ensure the long-term viability of the building.
Cabinet were also set to review a possible extension to the area originally agreed for sale at the current Ramsgate Swimming Pool site on Newington Road. This site was originally agreed for disposal by Cabinet in 2012.
The request to extend the area however has been withdrawn since the Cabinet papers were published.

Thanet Council withholds Transeuropa Documents from Councillor Driver

Last week I requested the Council's Chief Executive to arrange for me see all the documents related to the Transeuropa scandal. I have now received a reply from the Council's Legal officer, Harvey Patterson rejecting my request on very spurious grounds. I am forced to assume that by denying my request, the Council and its officer/ political leadership are is trying to cover something up. Perhaps they are worried that rules  may have broken or that the Council and its agents may have behaved improperly in setting up a 3 year secret deal which allowed Transeuropa Ferries to rack up an eye-watering  debt to the Council of at least £3.4million plus any other related debts or spending which could emerge as the saga unfolds, which you and I will ultimately have to pay for. I have published my reply to Mr Patterson on my blogsite
 
 
 
This issue will not go away. I will not stop asking questions and someone will eventually have to take responsibility for this appalling scandal.

Transeuropa Ferries Scandal More Questions than Answers

On 21 May I wrote to the District Auditor about the TransEuropa Ferry debt scandal. In that letter I asked some basic questions about how the debt was allowed grow and why the majority of elected Councillors were not informed about this debt and consulted about what to do. The District Auditor took the unusual step of requesting the Council Chief Executive, Dr. Sue McGongical to respond to my questions. He has now sent  me a copy of her reply which I have reproduced in full on my blogsite
 
 
Sue McGongical's response to my questions provides the most detailed account to date about this major financial scandal. However, it also raises many  serious questions about how the Council managed this disaster such as why only a handful of elected councillors were ever told about this deal in the 3 years it was in place. Why the growing debt was never mentioned when elected councillors agreed to set the Council budget over the past  2 years. What due diligence was carried out into TransEuropa Ferries and its alleged Italian investor in order to safeguard the interests of Thanet Council. I will be raising these questions and many more questions about this scandal on my blogsite in the next week or so.
 
This is the most serious financial scandal to have ever hit Thanet Council and taxpayers will ultimately have to pay the bill!
 
It is my intention to bring into the public arena as much information as I can so that the people of Thanet can judge for themselves. 
 
Please feel free to post any questions you think might be relevant on my blogsite and please pass on to me in confidence any information you might have about this scandalous issue. Its time for the people of Thanet to bring their Council under some form of  democratic control instead of allowing it to secretly gamble taxpayers money on failing companies.

THANET’S VIC CELEBRATES NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK

A team of volunteers from the Broadstairs Information Kiosk have been thanked by the management board for their dedication and commitment to supporting tourism across Thanet.

National Volunteers’ Week this year takes place between 1-7 June. The annual campaign realises the importance of volunteers to our service and economy. It encourages organisations to celebrate the brilliant contribution millions of volunteers make every year across the UK.

Broadstairs Information Kiosk Management Board; which is made up of Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council, Thanet District Council, Broadstairs Tourism and Leisure Association, Broadstairs and St Peter’s Chamber of Commerce and Shepherd Neame, has taken this opportunity to coordinate an event to celebrate the fantastic efforts volunteers’ from the Visitor Information Service put into both the organisation, and tourism to Thanet.

The team which includes more than 40 local people were invited to attend the Lillyputt Mini Golf course in Broadstairs, this week (3 June), for a fun filled evening of mini golf, followed by a traditional British cream tea. The event follows on from the recent success at the Visit England Awards for Excellence, which saw Thanet’s Visitor Information Service awarded Bronze for ‘Information Provider of the Year 2013’. 

Councillor Iris Johnston, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Thanet District Council is extremely grateful for the enormous contribution our volunteers make. They work extremely hard and it is with their help that we have achieved so much over the past year.
“It is great that the board can hold this event to show our appreciation in person, as without our volunteers the service we offer would not be as effective. Equipped with local knowledge and a great understanding of Thanet, it ensures visitors to the area receive a warm welcome, which is vital when encouraging repeat tourism to the district.”

PROSECUTION FOR FLY-TIPPING OFFENCE

A Ramsgate man has been fined, after being found guilty of a fly-tipping offence which took place in Ramsgate.
David Michael Smith (33) of Duncan Road appeared before Canterbury Magistrates Court on Wednesday 29 May and was found guilty of a fly-tipping multiple sacks of rubbish on Lancaster Close, Ramsgate on 6 November 2012.
Mr Smith was prosecuted under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 section 33 and was found guilty of a ‘Duty of Care’ to make sure rubbish in his keeping is disposed of in the correct manner.
In Court Mr Smith pleaded not guilty, however the evidence gathered by Environmental officers was sufficient enough to prove Mr Smith guilty. Mr Smith was fined £300, with clear up costs of £700 and a £30 victim surcharge.
Cabinet Member for Business, Corporate and Regulatory Services, Councillor Michelle Fenner, said: “This is another successful prosecution from Thanet District Council’s Environmental Enforcement officers.
“Residents of Thanet should not have to put up with this type of anti-social behavior and our Enforcement team continues to work hard to ensure culprits are caught and dealt with as appropriate.”

PLAY ABOUT LITERARY "HELL RAISERS" PREMIERES IN BROADSTAIRS

An extraordinary new play about the American "Beat Generation" gets its first staging on Thursday June 13 in the Red Hall, Broadstairs.
 
GOIN' TO SAN DIEGO is the work of Thanet's legendary Hags Ahoy company with Steven Todd. 
 
Hag's Agoy last production was "Because Of The Moon", the much praised play about Virginia Woolf.
 
Now the company's turned their attention to the Beat Generation writers, including Jack Kerouac Allen Ginsberg and WIlliam Burroughs, who shocked 1950s America with a lifestyle based on drugs, sex and a desire to shock.
 
But GOIN' TO SAN DIEGO offers a very different view of these notorious rebels in a production packed with wit and laughter -- and some surprising casting 
 
The talented Steven Todd plays writer Jack Kerouac, while Miranda Peacock, known for respectable lady-like roles, plays the controversial gay poet Allen Ginsberg. 
 
"Goin' To San Diego," is on Thursday 13 -- Sunday 16 June at the Red Hall, Grosvenor Road, Broadstairs.

Ramsgate Pleasurama decision. Provokes Angry Lobby on Thursday

Thanet Council's decision to allow Ramsgate  Pleasurama project developers more time to secure funding has provoked outrage amongst local people who will be lobbying a meeting of Ramsgate Town Council at the Custom House, Harbour Parade  tomorrow (Wednesday 5th June) from 6.15pm
SFP Ventures (UK) Ltd have been the  developers of this £30million luxury hotel/ flats project for over 10 years.
In that time little very little work has taken place on the project and local people have been forced to endure a derelict building site eyesore which has blighted one of the most prestigious seafront areas of Ramsgate  for a decade.
Earlier this year local people concerned about lack progress with the development  and the negative impact it was having on the seafront set up the Friends of Ramsgate Seafront (FORS) campaign group
FORS have organised 2 petitions of local people which have both collected over 1,000 signatures each.
The petitions called on the Council to remove the developers for blighting the seafront for over a decade and to rethink what might be developed on the site
Only last week, in response to the public pressure, the Council had promised an official investigation into  the development  including seeking legal advice to end the agreement with the developers and reclaim the public land. Now the Council appears to have done a U turn and has entered new talks with the developers.
Ramsgate Green Party Councillor, Ian Driver opposes the  development and is supporting the lobby along with FORS supporters.
He said   "I have some very serious doubts about project developers SFP Ventures and their ability to do the work. I am also very worried about the fact that the project is being built in  a high risk flood zone without a flood risk assessment being undertaken despite  advice by the Environmental Agency to have one. There are also some serious concerns about the stability of the cliff face which will be less than 10 mtrs behind the development. These factors lead me to believe that these are wrong developers, building the wrong sort of development in the wrong location.
