Schools: Writer’s Master Class Wed 13 November, 10am-4pm, £11 per head/free for teachers Inspired by the rise of newspapers and literature during the Georgian period, the Writer’s Master Class day is an opportunity for children at Key Stage 3 and 4 to learn new skills with professional writers and artists. Pupils write in response to the exhibitions, and work with poet and playwright Joseph Coelho, artist Dawn Coleand writer Sarah Davies to create their own printed manifestos.
What is Art? Panel Discussion Thu 14 November, 6pm, £6/£5Reflecting on questions raised at recent exhibitions, including Massimiliano Gioni's The Encyclopedic Palace at the Venice Biennale and the Hayward Gallery’s The Alternative Guide to the Universe, this talk, featuring major artists, critics and curators, considers how art is defined and who is understood to be an artist. Speakers include Sam Thorne, Associate Editor of Frieze international, artist Alan Kane and James Brett, the founder of the Museum of Everything. Schools: Parliament Week Women as Leaders Fri 15 November, 10am-2pm, free Parliament Week’s theme for 2013 is ‘Women in Democracy.’ Influential female leaders come together at Turner Contemporary to explore their experiences of leadership with young women. Talk: Constable: Nature or Art? with Anne Lyles Thu 21 November, 3pm, £6/£5 Art historian Anne Lyles discusses Constable’s work and the boundaries between naturalism and art, in the context of the exhibition culture of his time and the landscapes of his British contemporaries.
Film screening and Q&A: Time Bleeds Film screening and Q&A Sat 23 November, 11:15am, free Folkestone, the gateway to the First World War for 8 million troops, lies at the heart of the documentary Time Bleeds, which shows participants taken back to WW1 through a series of method acting workshops in order to answer key questions.
Performance: Lachrymose Sat 23 November, 2pm and 3.30pm, free Local singers perform a piece conceived by producer Tania Holland Williams and Turner Contemporary and composed by Jon Hering, in and around the gallery. The piece pays tribute aurally to lose lost at sea in the World Wars. It is further supported by Performing Rights Society Foundation and Arts Council England.
Christmas Late Night Live: Make it Festive Fri 29 November, 6pm- 9pm, free To celebrate the festive season, join us for an evening of craft and creativity with our Christmas late night live. Alongside the Christmas tree lights being switched on, The Big Singcommunity choir returns for another year, leading a Christmas carol sing-a-long. Purchase handmade gifts from Kent producers at Made Contemporary, our artists and makers fair, and try your hand at making some holiday decorations of your own. The evening also marks the opening of Artist Rooms Wall Drawing #1136 by Sol LeWitt in our Learning Studio.
Made Contemporary Fri 29 November until Sun 1 December 2013, 10am-6pm, free To celebrate the festive season, join us for a weekend of craft and creativity and buy seasonal products made by Kent artists and makers at our weekend long artist and makers fair. On Friday and Saturday, the Teenage Makers Market will take over our Clore Learning Studio, featuring products from Kent’s freshest young talent.Plus there’s a special family workshop Make on the Sunday.
