FINE OVER SCRAP METAL DELIVERIES

A Margate man has been fined £750 and ordered to pay costs of £130, after failing to keep details of deliveries of scrap metal.

Magistrates at Canterbury today (Tuesday 4 January) heard that Daniel Rolfe (37) from Staplehurst Gardens, Palm Bay, Margate was registered as a scrap metal dealer with Thanet District Council.

Dealers have to keep proper records of scrap metal they receive, including the registration number of any vehicle bringing it to the premises. On 28 May 2010, Mr. Rolfe was working at Kent Metals on the Whitehall Industrial Estate in Ramsgate, when police and council officers saw a lorry enter. Heavy duty wire wool and strips of lead were removed from the lorry.

The officers entered the dealership and seized the record books. There were entries for the day in question, but not for this particular lorry or load. Three separate charges were brought against Mr. Rolfe for failing to log the description and weight of the delivery, the date and time it was delivered and the lorry’s registration number.

Mr. Rolfe failed to appear at the magistrates’ court and the case was proved in his absence. He was fined £250 for each of the three offences and ordered to pay £130 costs to the council and the £15 victim surcharge.
