Thanet residents are being warned about two new scams, connected to Council Tax payments.
The council has received calls from customers over the last few days, who have been contacted by people about their Council Tax accounts. One scam tells people that they have a large refund due on their bank account, while the other claims that they have won a draw to have their Council Tax paid for them.
In both cases, people are being asked to give their bank account details to have the money paid to them and were also given a mobile phone number to call if there were any problems. The recipients then contacted the council, who confirmed that neither call had come from the council.
Cllr. Simon Moores, Cabinet Member for Customer Services and Regulatory Services, said: “We want to make people aware that these scams, which have been circulating for some time in other areas, are now doing the rounds here. The council would never make calls like this and, if you do receive a call of this nature, please do not give out any personal information to the callers.”
If anyone receives a suspicious call, they should contact the police on 01622 690690.
