Olympic Torch Relay: What to expect on the day.

There are just a few days left until the Olympic Torch Relay comes through Thanet on 19 July. Preparations are being made along the huge route – the longest in the county and excitement is building. Celebrations are being planned in areas that the Torch will pass through, giving people some fun and entertainment on the day. The route will start at Cliffsend just before 10am and make its final stop at Birchington just after 2:30pm. The full route and timings are available on the Thanet District Council website www.thanet.gov.uk/london2012 Our route will be welcoming a few celebrity torchbearers: Former Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering MBE will be carrying the torch in Margate along with artist Tracey Emin, retired Olympic javelin sportsmen Steve Backley will run through Ramsgate and Britain’s current number three tennis player Elena Baltacha will take it through St Peter’s. She will then go on to compete in this year’s Games. The Relay will be travelling down the left-hand side of the road, so the left side of the pavement is the best place to stand to see the Torch come past. Traffic on the right-hand side will be moving as normal, albeit slower than usual. We encourage residents to start lining the streets about an hour before the proposed arrival time to get the best view. Sponsors' vehicles will be arriving before the Flame itself and are keen to hand out souvenirs and mementos to the crowds - another good reason to stand on the left so that you can collect them up. Each Torchbearer will cover around 300 metres before handing over to the next, at torch ‘kissing points’. The full convoy will take around 15 minutes to pass by each spot. Some parking bays will be suspended and areas of the route that are expected to get busy will be steward-assisted, whilst in other places barriers may be put up to assist with crowd control and ensure safety. Delays and disruption should be expected for around an hour before it passes through and the following areas are expected to be particularly busy: Ramsgate Harbour, Margate Seafront, Northdown Road.  Dress for the weather – keep dry or keep sun-protected, depending on what the day brings us.  Celebrations are planned as follows: Cliffsend Cliffsend will be celebrating with live music, a steel band from Your School of Music in Canterbury and the Spire Academy School Band from Sturry. The mayor of Ramsgate will also be there to enjoy the party and perhaps even the fairground rides, along with local school children. Ramsgate The town centre will be busy with people who have waited to see the torch. Jazz bands will play to create a great atmosphere for the day. The Royal Standard of George IV will be raised outside the Royal Temple Yacht Club as the Torch passes along Royal Parade. The Mayor of Ramsgate and Broadstairs Sea Cadets will be in attendance. Broadstairs Schools will be gathering along the Broadway to watch the torch relay and to celebrate afterwards. Cliftonville From 11am, people visiting Cliftonville will be treated to a whole range of entertainment, arranged by businesses in the area, which is fully embracing this momentous occasion. There will be a children’s entertainer, live music, plus a best-dressed shop competition. There will also be a picnic and free activities in Dalby Square and Thanet District Council Leader Cllr. Clive Hart will be visiting. Margate From midday at the Piazza, visitors can enjoy music from Cllr. Mick Tomlinson. There will also be celebrations at the Turner Contemporary after the Torch has passed through, held by Tracey Emin. Birchington People in Birchington are going for gold with their toga-themed day.

Sandys: “Time to Stop the Retailers’ Rip-Offs and Hidden Costs.

Laura Sandys, MP for South Thanet, today backed a new Which? campaign calling for greater clarity in how supermarkets display the unit price of certain foods.

Sandys said: “Food products are shrinking in size, yet the prices are staying the same. Labelling is being switched from grams to kilograms to mask product changes. And worst of all, retailers are selling multipacks that are actually more expensive than if the product were bought singly. The Consumer is smart and will make the right decisions if allowed, but what we are increasingly seeing are attempts by supermarkets to limit the information available to shoppers. The consumer is now disadvantaged in an increasingly challenging market.

“When food prices are rising and some families are spending up to 50% of their disposable income on the weekly shop, we need to make it easier for the consumer to spot a real bargain and eliminate rip-offs.”

FLY-TIPPER PROSECUTED

A  Margate man has been successfully prosecuted for fly-tipping by Thanet District Council.
Thomas Brown (42) of Marine Terrace, appeared before Canterbury Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 27 June and pleaded guilty to depositing controlled waste.
 The incident took place in Ethelbert Crescent, Cliftonville on Tuesday 6 December 2011, when items of furniture from a flat clearance were left in the street. The incident was reported by a witness and verified by council CCTV operators. 
Brown was subsequently approached by a council enforcement officer and given the opportunity to remove the rubbish, but declined to do so.
Brown was fined £500 and ordered to pay £313.32 compensation, plus £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
 The council's Environmental Health Manager, Penny Button, said: "Any form of fly-tipping is totally unacceptable and the council will not hesitate to prosecute offenders. 
 "Apart from being anti-social and potentially dangerous, fly-tipping can have a detrimental effect on a whole neighbourhood. We take all fly-tipping incidents seriously, and hope that heavy fines will act as a suitable deterrent. If anyone sees any fly-tipping take place, I urge them to contact the council immediately."

THANET'S YOUNG PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING FIT

Young people from Ramsgate's Newington estate and Margate’s Millmead estate are being given the chance to receive boxing training - and it's all for free thanks to support from Thanet District Council. 

 The sessions – which have just started up – take place at the Newington Community Centre and Millmead Hall and, are aimed at local 10 to 17-year-olds who are keen to get fit. All the training is being delivered by qualified boxing tutors James Gregory, Jay Holloway and Andy Morris.

 James is Thanet Council's Sport & Leisure Officer, while Jay and Andy grew up on the Newington estate and are known and respected by all the local young people. Both Jay and Andy now work as part-time Sport 4 NRG coaches.

 Boxing - which is an Olympic sport - has always captured the imagination of those who wish to emulate legends such as ringside genius Muhammad Ali. But boxing requires a level of discipline that's not for the faint-hearted, and that's one of the many benefits the training sessions will instil in those who take part.

 James Gregory said: "The council has a great commitment to the young people of Thanet, and that's why we're supporting these training sessions. 

 "They provide a great way to keep fit and active and adhere to a healthy lifestyle. But they also enable young people to learn self-discipline and value the importance of respect - both for themselves and others."

 He added: "By its very nature, boxing training requires motivation, commitment and genuine effort. If a young person takes part in the sessions, they will have a real sense of achievement and this will give an enormous boost to self-confidence. I encourage anyone who's interested to come along to the free training sessions."

 The Sport 4 NRG boxing training sessions take place every Tuesday at Newington Community Centre from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Millmead sessions take place at Millmead Hall, Margate every Wednesday evening from 5pm to 6pm.

THANET WELCOMES PUGIN CONFERENCE

Thanet is set to play its part in hosting an academic conference that will focus on the life of Augustus Pugin, the architectural genius who had strong connections with Ramsgate. 

 Organised by the Kent School of Architecture at the University of Kent, the conference takes place from Thursday 12 to Monday 16 July, with the delegates being taken on a tour of Pugin’s Ramsgate on the first day.

 Over the next two days the delegates will head back to Canterbury before returning to Thanet with a Mass on Sunday at St Augustine’s in Ramsgate – the church that was paid for, built and designed by Pugin, and where he’s buried.

 Pugin’s internationally-renowned reputation was built upon his designs for the ‘Big Ben’ Clock Tower and Palace of Westminster in London. He was also recognised for his architectural designs for churches in Ireland and Australia.

 But although he was born in Bloomsbury, Pugin developed a love for Ramsgate – the town he made his home, and where he died in 1852 at the age of 40.  This strong Ramsgate connection means that for the Pugin academics, Thanet is an essential part of their itinerary.

 To make the delegates’ visit as rewarding as possible, Thanet District Council has formed close links with the Kent School of Architecture – including helping with coach transport from Canterbury to Ramsgate.

 And when they’re in Ramsgate, the delegates will receive an historic tour of the town with a guide from the Ramsgate Society, a visit to Pugin’s home, The Grange, and a lecture from the architect’s biographer, Rosemary Hill.

 Tourism Manager, Paula Harbidge, said: “Pugin was born 200 years ago, but his legacy stands as testament to his architectural brilliance.

 “We’re very proud of the strong connections that Thanet has with Pugin, and it’s great that the Kent School of Architecture has made Ramsgate an integral part of its Pugin bicentennial conference. Such events are wonderful for the local economy and they also enhance the area’s reputation – nationally and internationally.”

 Dr Timothy Brittain-Catlin of the Kent School of Architecture, said: 'We’re proud to be working with Thanet District Council on what promises to be a major international event celebrating the work of A.W.N. Pugin, one of Britain's greatest architects.

 “Pugin's Ramsgate house and church, The Grange and St Augustine's, are buildings of worldwide importance. We've had tremendous international interest in this conference, and we are delighted to be welcoming scholars from as far away as Canada and New Zealand.

 “We're sure that our visitors will leave with a greater understanding of the unique character of the architecture of the Thanet towns, and that in turn will do a great deal to ensure the long-term future of these buildings.”

 He added: “As an architecture school, we're also committed to working on projects that engage our students in the community here, and this event, which celebrates Pugin's bicentenary, promises to be something really special.”

GEEK 2012 was a record-breaking success When we set out to start a retro-gaming festival we were low on time and money but long on ideas and enthusiasm. Sometimes we thought we might have bitten off more than we could chew, but the gaming gods were with us and GEEK2012 (Games Expo East Kent) was a joystick jiggling, pixel-pumping success. We had over 2,000 visitors, got great visitor feedback (‘fun’ was the most popular word on feedback forms), and gained the confidence and resources to plan a bigger and better GEEK2013. To cap it all we’ve made it into the Guinness World Records. The officials were on hand to certify that 256 players took part in the world’s largest Pong tournament. Our Thanet souvenir-mugs are leaping off Turner Contemporary’s shelves When we noticed that visitors to Thanet couldn’t buy decent-quality souvenirs we decided to create some. We worked with East Kent College and developed a range of souvenir mugs. But while we’d solved the production side we were stymied by the lack of retail outlets. Enter the Turner Contemporary’s souvenir shop and their enlightened buying policy. We’re delighted to report that the first batch of 60 souvenir mugs have sold out and the Turner have re-ordered. At the moment the mugs are produced in Stoke-on-Trent but we hope to move production to Thanet kilns before the end of the year. Cllrs Driver and Harrison – Lies and Hypocrisy

The TDC Conservative Group notes with interest that Cllr Ian Driver and Cllr Mike Harrison have agreed to work together, after Cllr Harrison referred to Cllr Driver as a ‘shirt lifting gender bender’.

Conservative Group Leader, Cllr Bob Bayford commented: “This is a cynical arrangement which ensures that both parties continue to exercise influence via the Overview and Scrutiny Panel and both continue to collect their Special Responsibility Allowances for doing so. 

“Before receiving an Harrassment Notice from Kent Police and admitting that ‘I probably did say them things (sic)’, Cllr Harrison claimed on several occasions that his Facebook account had been hacked by the Conservative Group in an attempt to smear him.  He has never apologised for these outrageous lies. The Labour Group has failed to call him to account for this.

“They have also failed to officially register Cllr Harrison’s derisory one month’s suspension, a period which did not include a single council meeting.”

The sudden announcement of the Councillors’ rapprochement came just days after Cllr Driver was quoted in the Isle of Thanet Gazette on 22 June as saying: “There is no place for misogyny and homophobia in politics.  If you put yourself up for public office to represent people, that must include everyone regardless of their gender or sexuality.  If you have these views, you are not fit for public office.”

Thanet Independent Councillor, Ian Driver, has announced his intention to stand as a candidate in November's election for Kent Police Commissioner.

"I will be standing on a progressive platform calling for the reform of old fashioned and unworkable drugs and prostitution laws which will save £billions in police funding, which can be re-invested into community policing and cracking down on crime and disorder. I also want to Kent Police to take a much tougher stance on domestic abuse, hate crime and dangerous driving."

"Without the backing of a big party machine I will be reliant on donations from the Kent public to fund my campaign and pay the £5,000 election deposit. This is a chance for the people of Kent to have powerful, independent and non-party political person heading up law and order in the county".

Ramsgate Promenade Shelters “Back on Track”

Following the recent demise of local contractor DJ Ellis Construction, the Ramsgate Society are pleased to report that the restoration of the Ramsgate promenade shelters is now back on track.

Negotiations have been continuing with the principle sub contractor Mather and Smith and works have restarted on site with the removal of dilapidated sections of shelters at Paragon in preparation for their complete removal and replacement with two shelter frames that have already been restored. This work is being carried out quickly to reduce road restrictions to a minimum.

The programme of work will intensify after the first week in July and it is expected that the project will be completed on time in the autumn as originally planned.

Chairman of the Ramsgate Society Jocelyn McCarthy said: “We are delighted that the initial delay caused by the demise of DJ Ellis has now been resolved. The negotiations with Mather and Smith have gone well and with some minor variations to the scope of works we have sufficient funding in place to complete the project successfully.”
