Margate Masters to host National Beach Volleyball Finals for the second time

For the second year running the golden sands of Margate Beach will be hosting the Volleyball England Beach Tour Finals which will be on the 16 and 17 August. Thanet District Council’s Sport Matters team will be hosting the event which attracts the top players throughout the UK and across Europe.

The Margate Masters venue has beaten off tough competition from other coastal towns to retain this honour and has been highly praised in recent years being named ‘Best Event’ on tour for four years prior to being awarded the finals last year. Players will be trying to qualify for the Margate finals throughout the summer’s other events at Weymouth, Weston Super Mare, Great Yarmouth and Skegness.

Sponsored by Hornby Visitor Centre in Westwood, this free event will be watched by thousands on Sky Sports TV, providing plenty of publicity for Margate’s beautiful beaches and facilities and providing plenty of entertainment for all.

The event will provide Thanet’s residents and visitors with a fantastic opportunity to sit in free grandstand seating to watch this elite sport. There will be music and entertainment throughout, which is sure to create a fantastic atmosphere.

Canterbury Christchurch University will also become ‘Community Partner’ of the event this year providing event management staff to support delivery and volunteers to run the community ‘have a go’ courts throughout the weekend on our permanent Beach Sports Court on Margate Sands.

Thanet District Council’s sport department has been working closely with Volleyball England to host the event, with the aim to encourage people of all ages to come along and participate in a fun and energetic sport. The National Finals will be the biggest beach volleyball tournament in the country this year alone which offers a great volleyball event for spectators, officials and players.

Volleyball is an extremely popular sport and is one of the most spectated sports in the world.  With the natural coastline that Thanet has to offer Beach volleyball is the perfect sporting venue to welcome England and Europe’s beach volleyball stars!

Thanet District Council’s Leisure Manager Martyn Cassell said; “The event last year went down fantastically and we’re thrilled to once again have secured the finals of the Volleyball England Beach Tour. Among the numerous positives of securing the finals is the fact that this event attracts a vast amount of tourism to the district and creates a fun and friendly atmosphere for local residents too. The council’s sport and leisure department work hard in partnership with Volleyball England to ensure the event is successful and the both residents and visitors have a great time watching this fun elite sport and more importantly having a go themselves.’

If you would be interested in volunteering at the event, please contact the council’s Sports Development Officer Colin Rouse on 01843 577032 for further information.
