There are so many super coastal activities lined up by the Thanet Coast Project this summer that you’re bound to find at least one of interest to you! These free beach based activities are suitable for many different ages so everyone will have the chance to get out and about on our great beaches this summer.There are specific events for younger children (4-14s) including ‘Geology Rocks’ exploration of rocks and fossils; to ‘BeachART’ marine life sand competitions, a visit to Quex to look at the science and spectacle of the Victorian coast and also fascinating coastal stories – with Sea Monster Trail-Tales and Smugglers and Serpents!
For older children (8-18s), there are free taster sessions for surfing or kayaking, film-making workshops, or even scuba sessions, whilst a few summer specials ‘Beach Blasts’ will be full of different activities for 11-18s – from beach sport, art, surfing, safaris, music and even a barbecue!
For older folk, there’s guided walks with the Rock Doc at Pegwell Bay, Cliffsend and Kingsgate, and Ian Titley from the Natural History Museum with his ‘Seaweeds and their Secrets’ at Botany Bay.
Other family activities include free sailing taster sessions with the Margate Yacht Club and a gentle cycle ride around the Edge of the World Tour.
The only trip which is charged for is the classic four hour seal trips onboard the open yacht ‘Wildlife Sailing’. This trip takes explorers out from Minnis Bay to visit Thanet’s elusive seashore wildlife amongst the rockpools. As Mike Turner plans to retire after 14 years of these popular trips this summer could be the last chance to take part in this exciting off-shore excursion.
