NEW DREDGER HOOVERS HARBOUR

Dredging is now underway at the Port of Ramsgate, which will enable larger and deeper draft vessels to enter Ramsgate’s commercial port.

The dredging, which will be carried out by Westminster Dredging, is due to last for approximately three weeks and will see the silt being ‘hoovered up’ and deposited at a licensed dumpsite at Pegwell Bay and Dover.

Once the first stage is complete, a larger dredger will be able to come into the port to remove the silt that is needed to enable the TransEuropa/LD lines ship, ‘Ostend Spirit’ to operate the new joint service to Ostend for both freight and passengers.

Cllr. Roger Latchford OBE, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “
The dredging of the Port is essential for the new, larger vessel due in on the 20 March and the increased usage of the Port for the offshore windfarms. The council is undertaking a major investment programme in the Port and the Marina, the future regeneration initiatives will create jobs and facilitate future investment. This is good news for Ramsgate which, we are convinced, has a very exciting future ahead!”

  2. About time it did some dredging, it has allowed the port to silt up for years.
It had 4 anchors last year what has happened?? 3 anchors is the minimum you would expect for a marina and is a fairly low award the excellent marina at Dover has 5 anchors

which Infratil, TDC and KCC want to overfly 24/7 with jumbo jets.

  4. Is it true TDC flogged its one and only dredger therby requiring the hiring in of such equipment? For a harbour that suffers from regular silting a dredger would seem to be an essential piece of kit.

  5. A merited star marina surely has access to vessels of more than a metre and half draught at low tide unlike Ramsgate which is almost a tidal harbour and silting up fast a multi million dredging programme is needed to come into line with other major marinas T D C has not got that kind of cash Shame it has been let go by miss management over several years and money used for less important projects A private marina development company engaged several years ago may have been a solution but again the boat was missed

  6. can these dredgers do the harbour as well or are the poor fisherman and the leisure users being given the "finger" by tdc again.
I understand Roger Latchford has a long term vendetta against the fishermen after the beach party

  7. At least after taking millions out of the harbour account for years a little bit is being spent at the harbour.

  8. How disappointing that the marina has lost one of its gold anchors, i suppose the bean counters sold it , or didn't allow any money to be spent on the marina. What a suprise that tdc did not issue a press release, i think it is the first marina in the uk to have a gold anchor taken away that should be worthy of a comment by cllr John or Roger.
