A riot of creative entertainment at this year's SUMMER SQUALL in Ramsgate!

A SUMMER SQUALL: Sat 23 - Mon 25 August 2014

The group of trusty folk who put the Squall together hope very much that you'll enjoy what's on offer at this year's explosion of creative energy, on Ramsgate's royal harbour...

We've kept some existing ideas - there's music and performance all day Saturday on the open air stage by the beach. We've invited London's Unexpected Opera to perform NAKED OPERA on Sunday evening (with our own bar alongside, raising vital funds for the festival). Ramsgate's expert in 'model theatre' ROBERT POULTERbrings a double-bill of horror-inspired (but hugely funny) paper theatre on Saturday evening at the King's.

We've got new things happening - our theme is rebellious elements so there's a few unexpected things around town. We have our first 'Artist in Residence' with Teresa Smith of Mooch creating a CROWNING GLORY. Our first textile installation with OPERATION POPPY and our first film screening in the newly-opened Ramsgate Tunnels with SEVERN AND SOMME

There will be arty crafty workshops all weekend, with a theme of Vikings....oh, and there's a boat....the chaps from the Broadstairs Town Shed are building a replica longboat for us to burn on the beach on Monday night.

Almost all the work is FREE of charge and where there is a charge, it's to help us raise the cost of putting on the festival, all of which is produced by a voluntary team who want to help make Ramsgate a great place to be, with creative work that's inspiring and enlightening.

Do come if you can, do pass it on to anyone you think would enjoy taking part AND if you or friends in the area would like to do 2 hrs or so as a volunteer steward over the weekend, PLEASE get in touch!

A Summer Squall is about to sweep into town.....

A SUMMER SQUALL - Sat 24 - Mon 26 August
We’ve been quiet, getting this year’s Summer Squall ready, and now we’re nearly there…
Thanet Open Studios kicks off the fun this weekend (17/18 August) with artists in Ramgate, Margate, Broadstairs, Birchington and Westgate opening their doors. http://ramsgatearts.org/squall/open-studios
The Squall bursts into life at 10am on Saturday 24th when doors open at the UpDown Gallery for the  Open Art, selected by Piers Secunda, Cedric Christie, Margaret Buck, Ben Weidel-Kaufmann and gallery owner Kate Smith. http://ramsgatearts.org/squall-event/open-art-exhibition
On Ramsgate harbour, there’s a host of activity! Toc de Fusta from Spain, The Caravan Gallery, Sunbeam Walkies, our open air stage programmed with music and dance, The Barber of Seville (or Salisbury)…have a peek at the programme to see all that’s on around town. http://ramsgatearts.org/a-summer-squall
We have a Fringe programme for the first time! Some of town’s best bars and groups are putting on events in celebration of summer and the Squall. http://ramsgatearts.org/squall/fringe
But we need your help…Urban Exposure is a whole new concept for the Squall and we still need to raise £1500 to make this amazing day for Thanet young people happen. Jestressflo use freerunning and creative activities to captivate and enthuse young people. We’ve teamed up to present a day of tryouts and inspiration, culminating in a parkour freerunning display at 8.30pm A huge scaffold tower, lights and action – please, we need to make it great for them. If you can donate just £1 it will help us reach our target. Here’s the link http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/urban-exposure-at-the-ramsgate-summer-squall
AND….volunteers….we still need stewards for events, so if you can help for 2 hours, please get in touch urgently. It’s a great team and fun to be part of it all. Please contactsuegyde@hotmail.co.uk
We can hardly believe we’re here again! We’re indebted to Ramsgate Town Council, Thanet District Council and Arts Council England as major supporters and to London Array and Thorley Taverns. There’s a huge number of people who make this happen with help in one way or another. Thanks to all, and here’s to seeing you, your friends and contacts at the Squall!

CLOSING THE YEAR...and thinking of the next

Without doubt, this year's A Summer Squall hit a level we've not achieved before and set the event on to its next stage. La Boheme on an outdoor stage on the harbour, the premiere performance of Noggin the Nog, The Dualers drawing a huge crowd, Thanet artists and makers producing a Pavement Paradise - we had over 30,000 visitors, 130 professional artists taking part and 74 events over the 3 days. It was FUN, it was EXHAUSTING, it was INSPIRING!

We're programming now for 2013 and keen to hear from artists in all disciplines who have ideas which we can help to fulfill and show at the next or a future Squall.

Our next Festival Club is on Thurs 29 November with accoustic Jazz by DAYLIGHT SAVING http://ramsgatearts.org/festival-club

We continue to promote the work of artists in Thanet - on Sat 1 December local professional actors are giving a new performance to fundraise for the Mayor's Charities. Written by Frankie Jordan (Tom Thumb Theatre), produced by Albert House Productions,  'PANTO-DINE' is a riotous murder mystery, with a cast of deeply untrustworthy characters, inviting you to dine and pit your wits. A flyer is attached. The Mayor's fund contributed over £1000 to Ramsgate Arts in 2012, which is why we are keen to help this year.

We're delighted that Ramsgate now has the new Updown Gallery in Elms Avenue, the York Street Gallery continuing its fantastic shows, the new Blue Swift in Queen Street displaying contemporary art and artiness, Nice Things on Harbour Parade showing local art and artisans' work, Meltdowns with a superb programme of workshops, talks and exhibitions and The Great Wall of Ramsgate transforming an urban horror. And other new ideas emerging for the town all the time....

We urgently need new collaborators, even for 2 hours a week, so please get in touch if you are intrigued and want to join in making this huge event a continuing success for Ramsgate.

We'll be sending out news as it comes for 2013 and hope you'll get in touch if you'd like to contribute in any way at all.

With best wishes from

What's been going on at Ramsgate Arts?!

We've been a bit quiet on the publicity front since A Summer Squall last summer, but you can bet your life we've not been idle!

The new year means it's full steam ahead to produce the THIRD Squall arts festival, which will run from Sat 25 - Mon 27 August 2012. We're likely to run Thanet Open Studios over the two lead-up weekends, but that's to be confirmed....

Where are we? Well, we're fundraising furiously. We're talking to some exciting artists in the visual art and the performance world. Kinetic artists. London theatres about collaboration. National production companies. And regional and local artists, looking for people and companies we can work with, showcase, support and commission for new work. We will again partner with local groups to support their work in regenerating, revitalising and revisioning. As usual, our ambition is stretching resource, but we believe in aiming high!

What's on? We have a monthly Festival Club on the last Thursday each month,at the Small Boat Owers' Club, Guildford Lawn, Ramsgate. It's relaxed way to meet the local arts community and find out about new ideas and events. Anyone can come, next session on 23 Feb @ 8pm.

Exhibition by Lesley Gray 'Eclectic' opens tonight 3 Feb at the Belgian Cafe - please join us at the Private View, invitation attached.

Pugin's 200th Birthday Party by Clive Holland and Mischievous Theatre on 1 March @ 7.30pm - a unique celebration of one of Ramsgate's most influential residents - information attached.

Marine Studios - one of our partners for the festival, they have a brilliant and huge programme of events starting today, including GEEK2012 at the Winter Gardens. Information attached.

We hope you'll enjoy some of these activities. We're always looking for collaborations, artists and events for the festival. And offers of time to help! Just get in touch with anything you'd like to discuss.

With best wishes from all of us at Ramsgate Arts

Festival Club!

Dear Members, Friends, Artists (or all 3)

To keep us all going in the long gaps between festivals, we are starting a Festival club, where you and any like-minded friends, family or colleagues you want to bring along can get together once a month, have a drink, a chat, and get at least 20 minutes of Culture!

The First meeting will be Thursday 29th September at the Small Boat Owners' Club, on Guildford Lawn, Ramsgate, next to the Library.   We hope to meet on the last Thursday of the month every month for the foreseeable future.

If you don't know the SBO Club, it's a very useful space, with a bar, small kitchen, lovely loos, and even a tiny stage.   We hope to have a bit of mental stimulation every month, and this month Clive Holland will be kicking off the process with a short performance.  Perhaps some of you can offer entertainment or enlightenment at future events with music, poetry, a short talk, a piece of work you are doing or whatever you'd like to share, so please think about doing something.

We aren't charging any fees, drinks will be available for sale, and there will be a few snacks.  Come and enjoy each other's company  from 8.00pm

Look forward to seeing you there,

Kate Hamlyn

FIREFLY FIESTA on Saturday 17 September

Ramsgate Arts are producing FIREFLY FIESTA, a music and fireworks event on Ramsgate harbour.

We have been asked to produce a family-friendly event to close the summer season and have created FIREFLY FIESTA.

It's all about light and fire, the transitions between and the passing from light to dark - it refers back to the idea of Thanet as the Isle of Light or the Isle of Dark. It's a fun day, with music from midday to 10.30pm, a tent with lantern-making, storytelling and music you make yourself. There will be street entertainers and a craft market. And fireworks at 9pm!

A poster is attached. Please come along if you are nearby, please do pass this on to others, or tweet and facebook to tell your friends! You can like our page on Facebook at RamsgateArts, and we'll be sending out event invites for you to send on.

Appearing...Scandalmongers....Billy Chong Blues Band....Richard Rozzee Band.....Hullabaloo....Kent Show Choir....and more.....

With best wishes from us all

Thanet Wind Farm offers commission to local artists

Vattenfall, operators of the world’s largest offshore wind farm, off the Thanet coast, have
partnered with arts organisation Ramsgate Arts to offer a commission to local artists.

The company wants to bring art to their new flagship base in Ramsgate’s Royal harbour.

A newly-installed glass lift shaft is to be decorated, providing a beautiful addition to the
building, which will be visited by people from across the world.

Ramsgate Arts will curate the project and are inviting expressions of interest from artists
who work or live in Thanet. The area to fill is a total of 140cm x 200cm and the art can be in
any format that is sympathetic to and will work within the space and on glass. Work needs to
be completed by February 2011.

For further details, please email info@ramsgatearts.org or call Suzy Humphries on 07939
542990 for an informal chat.
