Summer of sport 2013 activity programme

A bumper packed sports programme produced by Thanet District Council’s Sports department is available now to keep young people active, inspired and having fun this summer!
The programme includes details of the free or low cost sports activities that have been organised or funded by the council’s Sport 4 NRG team, as well as a range of alternative activities provided by local sports clubs.
Whether its traditional team sports, activities on the beach or something more alternative, the council’s sports programme has this summer covered!
From mainstream football to the inflatable kind, streetdance, beach volleyball, futsal or trying out Pipeline’s mobile skate park, the council is encouraging young people of all ages to get involved in sport this summer.
Want to make an event of it? Why not hire the beach sports court on Margate Main Sands for individual or group events. The dedicated court is suitable for beach volleyball, soccer and a whole range of other beach sports. It comes with access to changing rooms, portable floodlighting and a seating area to watch the action. For more information contact Colin on 577032.
To ensure that sporting opportunities across the district are available for everyone, the council has worked closely with local clubs and sports providers to ensure that activities are inclusive for people of all abilities. Working closely with Skillnet, the council has also developed a dedicated programme of activities for people with disabilities from Monday 29 July up to Friday 30 August.
The council’s Summer of Sport 2013 programmes can be picked up in local sports centres, libraries, Thanet’s Gateway plus (Cecil Street, Margate) and many other public places. Full details of the sports activities on offer are also available to view online at www.thanet.gov.uk/sport
Councillor Iris Johnston, Cabinet Member for Community Services said “We understand how important it is for our local families to find affordable activities for their children during the school holiday period.
“Our summer sports programme is packed full of activities throughout the summer providing all of the sporting events in one handy document.
“We’re committed to creating an active and healthier Thanet and hope that by continuing to support sport and physical activity we can really make a positive difference to the lives of our young people.
“With the legacy of the Olympics and major national events like the Beach Volleyball Finals taking place right here in Margate, we want to do all we can to continue to inspire younger residents in Thanet to get involved in sport.”
The council’s Sport 4 NRG programme attracted more than 3,000 attendances to events held last year.

Swift House Cookery School opens in Bethersden – TV Chef Dev Biswal to teach fine dining Indian cookery

Swift House Cookery School, which has just opened in Bethersden near Ashford in Kent, has announced its programme of cookery courses, including a session with Dev Biswal, chef patron of the award-winning Ambrette restaurants in Margate and Rye.

Swift House Cookery School is owned and managed by Caroline Phillips, who studied at Ashburton Cookery School before going on to hone her skills at the prestigious Leiths Cookery School in London

The School is sponsored by Callebaut – the famous Belgium chocolate company.  It was Callebaut’s internationally acclaimed ChocolateAcademy where Caroline learned the craft of chocolatiering.

Caroline’s vision for Swift House Cookery School has inspired a diverse range of professional and experienced chefs to join her to form an enthusiastic team who are keen to share their specialist knowledge with both amateur and more experienced cooks.

Courses are designed to allow even the complete beginner to leave at the end of the day with a feeling of real achievement, having produced food to a professional standard whilst having great fun,” said Caroline.

She recently met the Michelin-rated Ambrette’s Dev Biswal giving live cooking demos at the Wealden Times Summer Fair, having previously seen his culinary skills on Channel 4 TV’s ‘Superscrimpers’, where he is the resident chef.

“Dev’s relaxed style and ability to create unique sumptuous dishes, with local and seasonal ingredients – using techniques which can easily be mastered by novice cooks, makes him an ideal guest chef for Swift House” said Caroline.

Dev gives regular cookery lessons to pupils at local schools and students of East Kent College.

All Swift House classes are limited to a maximum of just 8 people to ensure a high standard of individual attention.  Dev will share his culinary tips of how to balance flavours, spices and textures to perfection at the school on Sunday, 20th October between 9.30am and 3.30pm.  The cost is £125 per head.

Renowned for deft spicing and exquisite presentation, The Ambrette has recently been named as Best Restaurant by Produced in Kent,  Best Indian Restaurant in Britain by Morrisons magazine and Best Indian Restaurant in the South East by the Cobra Good Curry Guide – despite not having curry on its menus.

Other Swift House courses cost between £39 and £135 per person including all ingredients.  Sessions include how to make Gorgeous Truffles, Chocolate and Classic Vintage Cupcakes, Classic Roses in chocolate, flower paste and butter cream, Celebration Cakes, a Pastry Masterclass and Thai Cookery.  There are also children’s days and classes for would-be students about to start university, or young adults leaving home – and having to fend for themselves for the first time.

Swift House also offers Chocolate and Champagne Hen Parties, where up to eight chocolate loving friends can come together in a creative and fun environment learning how to temper chocolate, make ganaches, mould, and pipe delicate decorations like a professional.

Swift House Cookery School Gift Vouchers are also available.

Nearby overnight accommodation at local hotels and B+Bs can also be arranged for those travelling from outside the area.

The full schedule of cookery courses can be seen and booked online atwww.swifthousecookeryschool.co.uk

Putting Children First

This week the Prime Minister announced some major changes that will put children first and help ensure that they are not growing up too quickly. The Government has just obtained agreements from all the internet providers committing to install family friendly filters automatically, unless you don’t want them.

The internet has transformed our lives, making the world a smaller and much faster place to work and play. In a second we can now communicate and trade with the other side of the world from our phone, tablet or PC. But this revolution has brought with it a darker side that we all know exists but rarely discuss.

Naked pictures have been around since time immemorial and adult material has long been available for those who seek it, but the advent of the internet has brought pornography into all of our homes. Even the most innocent search can bring up some of the most extreme explicit images and whilst the majority of us just disregard these, is it right that anyone should have to sift through them? Moreover is it fair that our children are exposed to these most graphic scenes from a very young age?

I am far from an advocate of censorship, having previously been Chair of Open Democracy, a forum which pretty much does what it says on the tin. However children should be protected; that is our duty. Safeguarding issues are a top priority for parents but it is also a key responsibility of the government to help and support our families.

At present parents have to opt in to set up online filters and the media regulator Ofcom reports that only 46% of parents do have these filters in place on their home internet. We need to make life easier for mums and dads across the country.

The PM additionally promised to crack down on the most extreme forms of pornography including those depicting simulated rape. He told search engines like Google and Yahoo that they should clean up their acts and take the campaign against child pornography much further. With internet now available almost whenever and wherever, I for one am pleased that action is being taken to tackle the proliferation of these most abhorrent of images.

WILL SCOBIE

Statement by Clive Hart - Labour TDC Leader.

I am delighted that South Thanet Labour have selected Will Scobie as our parliamentary candidate for the next general election.

Will joined us at TDC in 2011 and his drive and commitment helped Thanet Labour to secure an increased representation at district level.

As Mayor of Margate 2012 to 2013 he proved 'age prejudiced' doubters completely wrong and had an outstanding year as the towns civic head.

Despite his relative youth, Will has been active in politics for many years now and has worked in several high level political offices whilst studying for his Master's Degree in Politics.

I've known Will and his lovely family as friends for many years and I've enjoyed a hearty Saturday breakfast with him for the past few years. In addition to our District and Labour Party duties, we have a great deal in common. He's a fellow member of the Fabian Society and the Unite Trade Union and he works closely with my wife on numerous ward issues. He is also Chair of the Dane Valley Community First Panel on which my wife also sits. I know from personal experience that Will is a committed and articulate individual whose heart is absolutely in the right place.

Will is very much the future of our local party and he is going to be a formidable candidate for the next general election.

It's onwards and upwards for the Labour Party here in Thanet!

Thanet Council – “Gangster Style Lawbreakers and Rule Benders”.

Green Party Councillor, Ian Driver, has accused Thanet District Council of behaving like “gangster style law breakers and rule benders”  in order to cover up a secret deal with Transeuropa Ferries (TEF) which has cost the council £3.3 million in unpaid bills which is unlikely to be recovered following TEFs liquidation in April.
Said Driver “over the past 8 weeks I have made 4 requests to see key documents about the secret deal with TEF. On each occasion my request has been rejected. My latest request under the Audit Commission Act 1998 to inspect the Council’s accounts and  documents related to the secret TEF debt deal has turned into a farce”.
“I  asked  to inspect and copy a large number of documents which will help me to establish the truth behind this secret £3.3million debt deal. However Sarah Martin, the Council’s Financial Services Manager, has told me that I will not be allowed to copy these documents”.
“Sarah Martin’s decision is unlawful. Section 15.1 of the Audit Commission Act allows anyone  inspecting the Council’s Accounts to take copies of any or all of the documents inspected. Furthermore the Audit Commission publication Council Accounts a Guide to your Rights (April 2012)  also makes it clear that I can copy the documents I have asked to inspect”.
“Most amazing of all advice published on Thanet Council’s website  says I have right to copy the documents I will inspecting yet Sarah Martin is now saying that even though the Council’s own guidance says I can take copies of the documents she won’t let me. This is unbelievable!”.
I can only assume that this “gangster style”  conspiracy of  lawbreaking and rule bending is deliberately aimed at frustrating my efforts to get to the truth behind the secret £3.3. million debt deal with TEF which will ultimately be paid for by Thanet Council tax-payers”.
In August Driver will be appealing to the Information Commissioner against the Council’s decision to withhold key TEF debt deal documents from him. If the Commissioner rules in Driver’s  favour he has promised to  publish the documents and “let the public of Thanet decide whether top  council officers and Labour and Conservative political bosses did the right thing by secretly allowing TEF to run up a debt of f £3.3 million which we will all have to pay for”.

For more information contact Ian Driver on 07866588766
Sarah Martin’s email to Ian Driver
Thank you for your e-mail and your attached request to inspect a number of the council's records relating to the Transeuropa debt.I am conscious that the Account and Audit Regulations give you the right to inspect, but not the right to make copies. I have therefore considered your request and have commented below on the information I can let you see in accordance with the regulations, but must stress that you will not be allowed to take copies of any of the documents provided for your inspection.

Section 15 of the Audit Commission Act 1998 E+W
(1)At each audit under this Act, other than an audit of accounts of a health service body, any persons interested may— (a)inspect the accounts to be audited and all books, deeds, contracts, bills, vouchers and receipts relating to them, and (b)make copies of all or any part of the accounts and those other documents

The Audit Commission Council Accounts A Guide to Your Rights
The law says you may inspect the accounts to be audited and all ‘books, deeds, contracts, bills, vouchers and receipts’ relating to them for that financial year. It also allows you to make copies of all, or any part, of the accounts and those other documents
Nobody should try to stop you from inspecting and copying documents, but you must also always act reasonably.
Thanet Council’s Guidance on copying documents

From 15 July 2013 to 9 August 2013 between 9.00 am and 4.30 pm each weekday any person may inspect the accounts of the Council for the year ended 31 March 2013 and certain related documents (comprising books, deeds, contracts, bills, vouchers and receipts) at the address given below.  They may also make copies of the accounts and documents.

Dorothy Cross: Connemara

23 July 2013

Press release
Dorothy Cross: Connemara
5 October 2013 – 5 January 2014

Turner Contemporary showcases the most comprehensive UK solo exhibition to date of new and existing work by the Irish artist Dorothy Cross. Connemara is an area of Ireland’s wild west coast, which has long been a destination for painters attempting to document the sea, sky, land and light. Connemara is also home to Dorothy Cross, and the source of inspiration for this new exhibition of her work. Cross’s sculpture, film and photography examine the relationship between living beings and the natural world around them, seeing both as sites of constant change, leaving residues of passing time, and strange and unexpected encounters.

Through major new commissions as well as existing works, the exhibition explores central themes in Cross’s practice, particularly the relationship between nature and the body, creation and destruction. Many of the artist’s works incorporate items found on the shore, including boats and animal skins, while others reflect on the environment. New videos will explore a cave near Cross’s home accessible only a few days a year, as well as Margate’s mysterious Shell Grotto. Also including photographs of the coast at Connemara, the exhibition will create a connection between that seaside location and Turner Contemporary’s position in Margate.

Dorothy Cross’s exhibition will be accompanied by Turner and Constable: Sketching from
Nature. Works from the Tate Collection
, an exhibition of oil sketches. Like Cross, these artists worked in direct response to their experience of the landscape. These two exhibitions champion Turner Contemporary’s ethos of bridging the gap between the historical and contemporary.

Turner and Constable: Sketching from Nature at Turner Contemporary

Press release
Turner and Constable: Sketching from Nature
Works from the Tate Collection
5 October 2013 – 5 January 2014

This autumn Turner Contemporary presents its first historical exhibition since the blockbuster Turner and the Elements with a major showcase of works by JMW Turner, John Constable and their contemporaries. Bringing together 75 paintings from the Tate collection, the exhibition explores the practice of oil sketching in the landscape in the fullest presentation of oil sketches from the Tate Collection to date. This approach to oil painting became increasingly fashionable during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These rarely shown works, radical for their time, demonstrate artists’ efforts to reflect direct experience of their environment, rather than a concern for careful composition.

The exhibition is organised around six principal landscape themes, reflecting interests and subjects common to artists of the period: sketching from nature; the city; the picturesque; the Thames, rivers and coasts; and rural nature. These themes are explored in the works of JMW Turner and John Constable as well as George Stubbs and John Sell Cotman, among others.

Organised by Compton Verney in Warwickshire, the exhibition is curated by Michael Rosenthal, Emeritus Professor of Art History, University of Warwick, one of the world’s foremost experts on the art of this period, and Anne Lyles, a leading authority on the art of John Constable.

This exhibition appears alongside Connemara, an exhibition of work by Irish artist Dorothy Cross.  Cross’s work presents a contemporary engagement with nature and the landscape, bringing the themes of Turner and Constable: Sketching from Nature. Works from the Tate Collection up to date.

On the road to give you recycling news

Thanet District Council will be out and about this summer hosting road shows to give residents information on the ‘Let’s Sort It Out, Together’ improved recycling service.
The first will be held on Friday 26th July at Sainsbury’s Supermarket, Margate Road, Broadstairs and throughout every week until the end of October. Road shows will be held across the district in Ramsgate, Margate, Broadstairs and Birchington every week until the end of October. Details are available online onwww.thanet.gov.uk/recycle4thanet
The improvements to the recycling service are part of a project involving the East Kent Partnership (Dover, Shepway, Canterbury and Thanet Councils) to save money collectively as part of Kent County Council’s commitment to increase recycling across the county.
Residents will be encouraged to use different containers to separate and recycle much more of their household waste resulting in less waste sent to landfill.
The road shows will be held at busy locations so residents can have the opportunity to speak with the Recycling and Waste Team, ask any questions they may have and see the new containers. The team will also welcome valuable feedback on the improved service.
Leaflets are being delivered to every home in Thanet in July, letting people know when the improvements will happen and what they will be. Pictures will show clearly what recycling bins, bags or boxes they will have and exactly what to put in them. Copies of this leaflet will also be available at the road shows.
Cabinet Member for Operational Services, Cllr. Alan Poole said: “We hope that by hosting the road shows, people in Thanet will come along and find out about the improvements, how they will affect them and how they can recycle more.
“We know it may be confusing at first but the benefits of increasing our recycling across Thanet are significant both for the environment and for the taxpayer. We hope that the information we are sending out and having staff from our Recycling and Waste Team available to speak to at road shows will help to clarify anything residents are unsure of.”

Internet Pornography – Prime Minister`s “useful first step”

Sir Roger Gale, North Thanet`s MP and a former television producer and director, has today described as “a useful first step” the Prime Minister`s initiative to prevent the exploitation of pornography on the internet.
The veteran MP recalls that
“During the lifetime of the previous Conservative administration I found little difficulty in persuading Virginia Bottomley, then the responsible Secretary of State, to proscribe the “Red Hot Dutch” television channel.  Precisely the same arguments were deployed, by an identical “liberal intelligentsia” to those that are being marshalled today against the Prime Minister`s initiative designed to give greater parental control over access to hard core pornography on the internet.
Then, we were told that it “is technically very difficult to prevent satellite broadcasts from other EU or overseas states” as if this was an excuse and a recipe for inaction and an affront to “freedom of individual choice”.
Today the Guardian-reading pundits of the BBC and Channel Four are busy railing against the common sense that says that children and teenagers have a right to normal childhood and adolescence without being bombarded with the “normality” of loveless sex and saying that “it is impossible and wrong to try to censor the `freedom` of the internet”.
It is broadly accepted, even by the professional libertarians, that “child abuse is not acceptable” without, apparently, recognising that the abuse of children takes place not only on the screen but also in the minds of those who have access to the material – which may only involve `consenting adults` - that leads young minds to believe that sodomy, for example, is “what people do”.
I recall, back in the “Red Hot Dutch” days, a Porn film director telling me that he preferred to make films on the continent because “British girls don`t like anal sex”.  Today, how many young women, and men, have demands made of them “if you care about me” because their sexual partner has been watching hard core pornography on the internet and believes that this is how “love” has to be made?
I frankly do not care, in this context, how many adult “liberties” we trample all over if we are able to protect our children or, in my case, our grandchildren, from exposure to what now appear to be accepted as `adult practices` until at the very least they are mature enough, and over the age of consent, and able to exercise judgement for themselves. Neither do I care too much about the untaxed profits of internet providers and search engines.
My only concern, reading between the lines of the Prime Minister`s statement, is that it concentrates on physical child abuse rather than going the whole hog and recognising that exposure to explicit sex, or violence, or a combination of both, can poison young minds whether or not children are actually depicted in the scenes taking place before their eyes.
We need to move further and faster. In the UK outlets such as mainline stations, Starbucks and other youth-populated arenas may now be filtering free Wi-Fi availability to prevent young people from accessing sites barred at home. But throughout mainland Europe is this also the case?  Of course not! If we are to exercise any effective transfrontier control over a trade in exploitation that is worth billions then this is one area that a bit of communitaire co-operation might benefit from. But that, of course, would hit some well money-laundered profits in the groin”!
